I crocheted a few "purses" with some jute gardening twine I got from the hardware shop and stuffed them with some succulents. Jute acts very much like coir or coconut fiber: it's biodegradable and provides good drainage. Sometimes, I don't even fill the crocheted jute containers with soil, and the succulents will root into the jute (hey, that rhymes).

I lined the inside of this one with newspaper before filling it with potting soil. When it comes to watering, I take it outside and spray the entire arrangement--purse and all--with water.

These little ones weren't lined with paper. I intend to leave them outside just as they are.

This is such a great idea and looks fantastic. They would complement any garden or indoor area.

Very cute and what a great yard art item and gift item. Jute is cheap and easily attainable. I now have another craft on my list. I love them.

I think they are very cute for the garden or even inside...succulents don't require a lot of water, so they should last for quite some time..

Thanks for sharing!  I love the first one...it is garden art how you planted the different varieties together!

I love that. It's such a pretty yet practical way to display your plants. I really love how you did the first one.

I love your little purses and just made a few. I will be making more for a craft fair (for charity) this fall. Nurturing the succulents along right now. This is a wonderful idea. Thank you.

Congratulations!

I made a bunch of little purses out of jute and never got around to planting them with succulents. But one became a pincushion and another became a monster's basket of eyes. And another became a doll's purse. So thank you. I love the inspiration!

Wow! Thank you so much Craftster for featuring this project in the top projects of 2013. Crafting is fueled by a cycle of inspiration: because you're inspired, I'm inspired and vice versa.
