Our local cub scouts wanted to put on a play and of course scouts is full of characters and details from The Jungle Book so what better story to choose? As the resident crazy crafter, I was asked to help design sock puppets that the cubs could assemble themselves and use in the play. We had four glue guns going and a line up of eager 8-10 year olds sticking on tails, ears, eyes, noses and bits of fur. It was such a fun night and the play was AWESOME! I was so pleased to have been invited to participate in this and while I won't post pictures of the cubs themselves I can sure show you our creations.

Akela and Raksha (aka mama and papa wolf)

There were 6 wolf cubs too

Bhaaloo

Bagheera

Kaa

Shere Khan

Mowgli

And King Louie who doesn't appear in the original story but was my test sock puppet and now belongs to my daughter who just Loves his to bits, lol.

This is so great...involving the cub scouts...I bet they had a blast and learned a thing or two!

Did you have some of the felt pieces already cut out for them?  How much prep work did you do?  I was thinking that as a summer camp project for wee ones, it would be nice to have a container of noses, ears, lips, etc. for them to pick to make random sock puppets...

great idea and execution, CLM...

Thanks, it was super fun. I think everybody enjoyed themselves at least as much as I did.
I did a TON of prep work actually, but only because we didn't have a lot of time for assembly. I would much rather have given them a bucket of eyes and noses, lol. It took me a few hours to get everything ready Tongue.
For the wolves, I prepped their ears and tails which were hot glued together already and just had to be glued on. They are grey fleece and white fun fur, the tails are cone shaped.
The tiger's tail was glued in a tube with stripes on, body stripes cut out but not glued on.
The wolf, tiger and bear faces were prepped, the eyes glued on so the whole piece was ready to be glued to the sock. The mouths had tongues and teeth already on, just had to be glued in.
Ears with circles in them were glued together and all fur parts were pre-cut. Each character was in individually labelled baggies.
I burned my fingers A LOT!

Whow, so "few" parts and nevertheless so much variety! My favorite is Kaa, the way (s)he looks, great!
I think this rocks!

I got all those socks at the dollar store! They wouldn't be great for wearing on your feet but they were just so perfect for the puppets, I was really pleased to find them all there.
