The mug rug I made my partner for the recent swap is a negative space butterfly made of many many many many many frenchknots.
I used 9 shades of pastel purple, with the colours getting stronger towards the outer edge.

I backed it onto some paisley fabric and trimmed with lace.

I'm pretty pleased with how it came out, though I wish I'd given more thought to the composition of where the butterfly sat on the fabric before I started - becasue I only used a small piece of fabric I didn't have the flexibility I would have liked to play with where the shape would sit within the piece as a whole

I bet you're an expert at french knots now! I still get the odd dodgy one with a giant loop sticking out the top Sad Your butterfly is gorgeous.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the butterfly placement, it looks perfect to me?  Anyway, I think the whole thing is very pretty.

The "F" in FUN stands for French knots!

I love this whole mug rug, the lace the back fabric...

But the butterfly of French Knots blows me away.

Beautiful work!!!

It's not 'wrong' as such, but I wish I'd used a bigger bit of fabric, then I could have played with having it on an angle, or offset from centre, or something Smiley

Thanks for your lovely comments everyone!

That is so gorgeous. I love the effect of all those french knots. Never would have thought of doing that - great job!
