Hi wonderful Craftster-ers!  I need some advice.  My 5 y.o. son is really interested in bones (skulls especially) and I'd love to make him a quilt with a different skull on each square.

I've come across some wonderful websites which sell skulls, so they have great images like this

My drawing skills are not great, so to try to stencil something like that is not an option.  I'm concerned about ink printing on fabric not withholding many washes.  I don't know anything about screen printing.

If I were to try to get this type of image on fabric, easily, and with minimal cost, and could withhold many washes, what would you suggest?  Or, would you suggest taking the image, then, finding the main lines to outline, and embroider it?

Here's my Pinterest Board for  this project.

Any and all advice  is appreciated! Thanks!

Sounds like a neat project!! Here is a tutorial for photo-transferring to fabric...

http://www.abeautifulmess.com/2011/10/how-to-transfer-a-photo-to-fabric.html

... that might be a good option, assuming you have the images you want to use. I'm not sure how it would hold up to washing though?? Maybe you could do a swatch/test piece to see.

I think embroidery sounds really cool but that would be labor intensive. Perhaps you could do a mix of both photo transfer and embroidery for extra texture?

Slightly unrelated but have you seen this book, http://www.amazon.com/Skulls-Exploration-Dudleys-Curious-Collection/dp/1579129129/? We got it for my Dad for xmas this year. It's really neat!

Thanks, for the suggestions. That book looks really cool.  I read on that first tute you posted, but as it says "handwash only" I'm not sure it would work for this project, as I certainly am not handwashing a quilt!  I think I may just try it out for a pillow or something sometime.

I found a whole bunch of good images  of drawn skulls with very traceable lines, so I think I'm going to go ahead an embroider them...and off to embark on yet another lengthy project! I  love  my son. Smiley
