For the zipper - I like following Noodleheads open wide zipper method.  http://www.noodle-head.com/2012/06/open-wide-zippered-pouch-diy-tutorial.html

if you don't like the tail, you can turn the ends in.. I found this for some tips  http://projectsbyjane.blogspot.com/2010/11/this-is-how-i-sew-my-zip-pouch.html
