Hi,

I've got a question about USPS. My partner sent my package out on the 13th and I just received a update on the USPS tracking site that said my package was now 'Dead Mail/ Sent to Mail Recovery.' It then went on to give me this notification. "Your item could not be delivered or returned to the sender. It is being forwarded to a USPS mail recovery center where it will be processed."

Does anyone know how to handle this? What do I do?

Oh dear! I did a quick search and it sounds like 'dead mail' is a letter or parcel that can't be delivered and the address info of the sender is not available so it can't be returned either Sad. From what I read, the postal service will open the mail to see if they can find any info that would identify where the package needed to go.

I wonder if you if you could locate your local recovery center and contact them? Maybe your partner could provide identifying details?

I would also open a ticket with the swap mods to see if they have thoughts on a replacement or angel package if you're not able to recover your original mail.

I hope it gets to you!! What a bummer Sad.

Please open a Help Desk ticket (be sure to choose Swap Related in the menu) with all the particulars-Swap name, USPS # where it was mailed from and where it is going to.  The swap mods will help you sort it out Smiley

Sigh, I'm in mourning for my dead mail...

I pm'd Wizard's_Pupil and filled her in on this, but this is the legwork I've been up to this afternoon.

I called usps customer service and after telling the automated system "I'd like to talk to a person, please" around 10-ish times I did indeed get to talk to (and this is not sarcastic in the slightest) the nicest most helpful lady.

What she did is open a "case file" for my package and took down my email.
I'll get alerts when anything happens.
I'm also supposed to get an email requesting contact info from me so their investigators can talk to me in person.
As this just happened today, I won't expect anything until tomorrow.

Sad thing is, I checked this morning and the status was the package had made it to St. Paul/50 miles north. Now the status doesn't show St. Paul at all!

Hopefully this all turns out for the best.
The best being that it was only human error and the package is still on it's way and will magically arrive when it's supposed to.

A girl can dream, right?

Just got off the phone with the post office today and long story short: No case was opened by the formerly "nicest, most helpful" lady.

Instead I got a no-nonsense wonderful man named Mike, who not only opened a case for us but took information I thought it strange the lady yesterday didn't ask for.
Names/Addresses of sender/recipient
My phone number...

He gave me an actual case #!
He also gave me further instructions if I don't get a phone call by end of business Friday.

Here's what I've learned from all this,
1. Never give up, never surrender!
2. Put a card with all the addresses INSIDE the box within the contents as well as on the outside!

Oh, and think I've forgotten one thing...The Box was purchased at the post office the day I mailed and the contents were all wrapped up in a plastic shopping bag. Mr. Mike laughed when I told him this and added "so it wasn't like I mailed it in a duct taped garbage bag".
I like leaving a conversation with them chuckling!

Update:
I got a call from the PO that they were sending me a Mail Recovery Form to fill out.

I got the form the next day, filled it out, included pictures, and hand delivered it today.
I also had the counter person read over everything to MAKE SURE it was filled out correctly.  Wink

He informed me this was the last step I could take.
The only thing left to do is wait. If they find it, they'll send it straight to Wizards_Pupil.
If not, then we won't hear anything.

Cross your fingers!
(and toes!)

Here's my question:
Should my absolutely wonderful partner, who is also the organizer go ahead and try to find an angel?
I could try to remake most of the stuff in the package, but I'm not sure of the time table I can commit to....it may take a while...
I feel just awful about this.

Did they give you any idea at all about when they might send it to her?

I'd say give it until the end of next week, and if we haven't heard anything by then, posting for an angel is in order. Meanwhile, everyone needs to keep their fingers crossed!
