Ok, this project has been more than six weeks in the making.  It is made entirely from scatch, no kit.  The back, sides and headstock are walnut. the front is silk spruce, the neck and bridge are mahogany, the fretboard is purpleheart, and the nut and saddle are ebony.  All of the splines on the inside are pine.

It has nine coats of shellac on it.

Anyway, here is my latest project, a ukulele.

This absolutely floors me! You are a wood working magician. I love the wood on the back - it almost looks like tiger stripes Smiley.

I don't think I can formulate a better sentence or come up with more appropriate adjectives than have already been expressed.  This is what superlatives were made for.

Well, since I'm not well versed in ukuleles, I'm not sure that I would call it top of the line.  It has nylgut strings, so in my opinion, it could be better (I prefer steel).  However, since it is the first musical instrument I've ever made, I think it sounds great.  I've actually figured out the fingering and played a couple of songs, and they sound ok to me.

Thanks for the comments.

This is gorgeous Pinokeeo - great craftsmanship. I used to play, just a little bit - that was a long time ago.

Magnificent! What "voice" is it?

I bought my first uke, an electric, of all things, and find that even the nylon strings make my fingertips numb. This is a problem because I'm an acupuncturist and massage therapist, so calluses are a no go. But enough of my problems!

Your skill and perseverance are remarkable and I hope to see many more beautiful instruments here on Craftster.

It's a soprano uke.

I don't know anyone who works with their fintertips that can play stringed instruments.  My fingers are permanently calloused, so there isn't a whole lot of feeling in them.  I can tell when I'm touching something, but it isn't a strong sensation.

Maybe you could try drumming or play the piano, or if you have strong lungs, try the flute or recorder.  I can't play wind instruments because I have weak lungs, but everything else works for me.

I just got my new gourd book, so I'm off to see what kinds of gourds are ready to be made into something fun.

I entered this at the local county fair.  It took first place and Best of Show.  I got a beautiful black and white ribbon as well as the usual blue ribbon.
