Hi all,

I am new here Cheesy

I make knotted friendship bracelets in my spare time for fun.

We have a merchant co-op in town so I looked into that. They rent space to people for cheap with no committment. You put your items in your space and you get all of the profit from the items that are sold. It would be $10/month to set up a counter display.

This place brings in a unique crowd:
Someone sells crochet fetuses in a jar
There are lots of two headed taxiderm animals
There are retro video games, clothing and furniture
Once a month the Bronies come in and watch My Little Pony

I was told that if I could make bracelets that feature nerdy things and geeky things (like My Little Pony) they will fly off of the shelf.

Here is my dilema:

Alpha bracelets are difficult (For example:

I am not good at it yet and they are frusterating and time consuming. I would rather knot hemp, bead or make normal patterns rather than alpha bracelets because it is more enjoyable to me.

I love using charms but I can get very few nerdy charms for a bargin. My Little Pony charms don't seem to exist for instance.

I am contemplating using shrink plastic to make charms.

I was also looking at using fabric and a stiffener to make charms. Character prints seem to be too big for bracelets and necklaces. I also cannot get them locally.

I also have some random beads that might sell, like cupcakes and skulls. I also saw a tutorial for seed bead stars that I am going to try.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what might appeal to those group of customers?

I'll attach some files of the bracelets I have made in the past. I would love some feedback on them and some suggestions on what I could do to make them more appealing to the people who shop there.

Sorry, but the only suggestion that I have for you is to read up on copyright laws.
You cannot offer anything for sale using someone elses design (like my little pony).

Welcome to craftster!
Being new, you might want to check out craftster's gudelines for posting & whatnot: http://www.craftster.org/rules.html#axzz2Qf8gmU58

We don't discuss selling on the Jewelry & Trinkets board, but we can certainly offer feedback about your crafts if you wish! To discuss business, there's the crafty business advice area here: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?board=101.0#axzz2Qf8gmU58

Looking forward to seeing more of your work!

My suggestion is no matter what you're crafting...do what you love & want to do...if it's knotting hemp, then knot hemp & don't just craft to fit in anywhere. If you're passionate about your craft, it will show & others will get excited too. If you're going to craft MLP or other licensed characters, be sure to get permission from the licensee.

Thank you for the replies  Smiley

I made the thread with the intent of getting some suggestions as to what might work with this particular crowd.

I do have some questions about copyright laws. Based on what local venders are selling, Etsy and what I learned back in high school as yearbook editor, I was under the impression that art that deviates a lot from the original design is not a copyright infringement so forgive me for diving into that territory. If someone wants to PM me about any of that, feel free. I'd appreciate more information.

I will end that there.

Normal patterns are fun for me. Experimenting with hemp is fun for me. Adding charms and beads is fun for me. I hate the character bracelets with a passion haha. The only reason I attempted it is because that is what people want. I am desperate for some other ideas on what I can try.

I do want to try these: http://howdidyoumakethis.com/blog/2012/8/26/make-this-beaded-stars.html
Perhaps in bright bold colours. Maybe turn it into a charm.

I was also thinking of doing phrases or words... like Game Over... or even swear words on a bracelet.

How could that be... bet it's because they are beautiful.

Cut the nerds. Do what you like best. The rest will follow.

You can't keep making things you don't like to make, and no matter what you make, there will always be a demand to slap a My Little Pony or that cute kitty or Mickey or Avengers or whatever on it. Sure, they will sell, but you can go NOWHERE selling stuff like that. It's a dead end no matter what, you'll always be limited by where you can "get away" with selling it and never have anything of your own. So ditch it now and start making your own mark in the world.

If you like to do different things, then do them. What you like can be liked by others. Find your own style, develop it, and go with it.
