So I just finished a skirt for a friend's wife out of his old ACUs.  It's short, pleated and really awesome.  Well, after pleating 8 inch wide fabric I found out she wanted it really short.  So, I trimmed 4 inches off and finished her skirt.  Then I spent two hours looking at the left over pleats.  And another day and a half considering a baby skirt for their daughter.  Aaaand now I'm sitting here with a big (22 inch by 6 or 7 inch) pannel with pleats on the bottom...  And I realized two things.  1) I've never made baby clothes.  2) I have no elastic.  Eep!

So I was thinking "I'll just slap some belt loops on it and tie it on with ribbon!"  But that seems like one of those things that's good in theory, bad in practice.  So I ask - Would the ribbon work okay?  Is there any other good way to do this?  Or am I going to have to just break down and go to the store before I can finish this skirt?

(I'm 17 weeks with my first and just starting to show, so I'm not terribly fond of going out.)

I would say elastic would be best, as a toddler will likely untie the ribbon far too frequently either on purpose or through regular toddler movement.

I kinda figured that.  She's wonderful, but very curious, in a "What happens if I eat batteries?" kind of way.  I'll probably have to wait for them to be in town again to finish the skirt though, since I recall them mentioning her wearing an off size for her age but I can't remember what.  Plus, knowing my luck, by the time she got it she'd already outgrow it. xD

Sadly, that's an occupational hazard of sewing for kids...
