Homemade Sprinkles? -Aint nobody got time for that!
Ever consider making homemade sprinkles? Well you can! But you’re probably thinking, “aint nobody got time for that!” and, you may be right. They do take a bit of time, but for homemade it can be worth it.
*For those people that are trying to be more health conscious with watching preservatives or fake colorings, these are great! No hard to pronounce ingredients. (The sprinkles in my pantry have 18 different ingredients!)
*Perhaps you need to make them specifically gluten free or whatever you may need for allergens.
*You can make them in any color; maybe to match a holiday, or the colors of an event you would be hosting when sprinkles in that specific color may be hard to find.
*Plus it’s fun to say, “these cupcakes are completely homemade, even the sprinkles!”
*And they are cheap! No more $4 mini bottles, do these for under fifty cents.
Interested? Then maybe we should move on. I found this recipe from pinterest and have been using it for a while now. It’s made from just a basic royal frosting, like you’d use to decorate a gingerbread house. There are lots of different recipes, so just google if this recipe doesn’t seem to work for you.Homemade Sprinkles
1 cup of powdered sugar
½ teaspoon Wilton Meringue Powder or dehydrated egg whites
1 Tablespoon hot water, have extra 1 cup ready
½ teaspoon or more flavoring
Mixing bowl and smaller bowl or cup
Silicone baking liner or wax paper
Wisk or electric mixer
Food coloring, paste gives a brighter color but liquid can be used
Pastry bag with small round tip
Measuring cups and spoons
Container for sprinkles after
1. In small bowl mix ½ teaspoon meringue powder with 1 tablespoon hot water and flavoring. Meringue will not fully dissolve, but mix your best. ~ If using liquid coloring you can add in now if you’d like or wait until later and divide the batch for more than one color.
2. Sift powdered sugar into larger bowl then pour contents of smaller bowl over it.
3. Mix well with your electric mixer or wisk. Add teaspoons of water until you end up with a thick, but shiny and soft frosting. Texture should be like that of whipped cream frosting. Needs to be thick to hold its shape later, but still should be soft enough to pipe. You will not use the whole one cup of water.
4. If you haven’t added food coloring yet, add now until desired color is achieved.
5. Fold the piping bag over your hand. ~Your hand cups around the inside about half way up, then fold the rest of the bag down around your wrist.
6. Use your spatula to scrape out the frosting into your piping bag.
7. Use your fingers to slide the frosting to the tip.
8. Twist the top, and then hold it closed with one hand and steady with the other.
9. Begin piping on your silicone sheet or wax paper. Use long lines, as straight as you can, but wiggles won’t be a problem later on. ~ if your mix is too hard to pipe at this point, you can unfold the bag and scoop it out adding more water, but try to make it workable first off, scooping out of the bag is much harder.
10. Make more and more lines until your frosting is out or your hand hurts too much to go on.
11. Wait a full 24 hours to dry. ~Important. You want these to be completely dry. Any moisture inside will make these sticky when trying to cut.
12. Begin cutting. Use your knife and press down to make small pieces. ~ This part gets messy and pieces can go flying. Make sure you are somewhere you can vacuum or sweep up afterward.
13. You are done. Place sprinkles into container, or use them to decorate.
