I took the seat off of the bench and removed the old cover. Make sure that your fabric is ironed and not creased. Then, I recovered it using upholstery nails (the original ones from the bench). This saves staples and if they've been holding down the fabric this long, they can keep doing their job. You can also just staple around the edges to make sure that all is secure, so that if you're sitting down and getting up from the bench, you're not taking the new fabric with you!

While the bench top is removed, wipe down the bench form of any cobwebs, dirt, dust, etc. Spray with primer. Give at least one coat (two if you're covering dark wood or wood with a thick coat of poly). Then spray at least two/three coats of your chosen color. Let dry and reattach bench top.
