I was shocked when TheDaytimeHeroes posted her Jackalope painting because I had one planned to paint that weekend for a fundraising event.  Great minds think alike I suppose!

There is a local even to raise funds for our community art center.  50+ artists come in and do live painting/drawing/sculpting etc and the art is auctioned off by silent auction.  The auctions are staggered to close every 45 minutes so that if you have multiple auctions you're interested in you have the opportunity to bid on all (or at least most) of them.

I decided to paint a jackalope.  The public doesn't arrive at the event until 6pm, but artists can come in and begin their work at noon.  I arrived at noon with my image sketched on a toned board, but that's about it.  My auction closed at 10:15pm and I finished about 3 minutes before the close of the auction......I never stopped painting.....all.....day.....long.

There were several bidders, but only three were intent.  Eventually, it was down to two ladies that were determined THEY were the ones that were going to win the painting. Nearing the auction end one lady had the highest bid and was trying to distract the other lady so she couldn't see that time was running out, but while she was busy distracting a guy stepped in behind her in the final seconds to bid one final time.  There was no time left for a counter bid so he won.  The woman who was outbid was so angry she threw her paddle!!  However, I managed to get three commissions out of the evening so it was a good day for me.

The final piece:

and progress shots throughout the night (I tend to paint from the background to the foreground before making final adjustments to a painting so I paint from section to section):

This was about the time that the public was coming in and I needed to complete the face so that it was kind of clear what the painting would look like:

Thank you everyone.

I wish I'd thought of taking a photo of my sketch before I transferred it to the board, but I was in a bit of a hurry.  Though this painting section to section isn't the way I've been taught I'm SUPPOSED to paint it works for me.

As soon as my chicken painting is dry enough to scan I'll post that......I just made some final touch-ups to it yesterday so it can be sent out to a show in NY.

Yay Jackalopes! Sooo underappreciated!

I'm so glad you posted some work-in-progress shots too, I just adore seeing how other artists work.
There is so much gorgeous texture in your paint strokes, it just amplifies everything.
