Always rewind into a ball. Hate the loose skeins that come from the store. Also, I've been buying budget wool from The Warehouse (400gm for $12NZ) and the wool is really bad, so it can either only be wound from the outside, or rewound into a giant ball. The wool is so bad that it is not one long string, there's all sorts of bits, then they shove random bits in the middle... But it's cheap!

But even with the little 100g balls, I re-roll. It's the only way I can eyeball how much wool I have left.

I work from the skein, usually pulling from the middle but if I can't find the middle end I'll just pull from the outside. Sometimes when a skein gets small enough I'll ball it up but I'm usually just too lazy for that.  Undecided

I usually work from skein and pull from preg_replace('/(.{19})/', '$1 ', 'middle....unless...I') can't find the start in the middle then I just use the yarn on the outside.

I always pull from the middle of a skein. The "limp noodle of yarn" effect does get a little irritating sometimes, but it seems inefficient to spend all that time balling yarn. I've known people who will use a 2- or 3-liter soda bottle; they cut the bottom off and feed the yarn through the cap end, that way the skein doesn't get crushed when the center is gone.
I do ball up my yarn when it comes in a wad or a rope. It seems like the fancier the yarn you get, the more likely it is to get tangled when you're trying to convert it from packaged-for-sale to balled-for-use!
