Here are a couple of cakes I've made recently.

The first is a cake I made for my littlest one's 3rd birthday. He absolutely LOVES tools so that was the theme for this cake.

This second cake was an order for a little girls 3rd birthday. The Little Mermaid figures were provided by the client, and the rest of the decorating is buttercream with fondant accents.

C&C very welcome!

The first one is fab but WOW, I got a bit over excited when I saw the little mermaid one! That's fantastic. Must have taken ages. Lucky, lucky kids Smiley

Great job on them.  The tools look fantastic and I love how you did the sea.

how cute! the little mermaid one makes me want to make one like it for my niece, i love the technique you used for the water effect (forget what that style's called) what a great way to turn simple techniques into a more complicated looking cake.

and i absolutely love the tool one, you did such a great job on the piece of wood on top and i just love the measuring tape on the bottom

Those cakes look wonderful!
I bet the kids loved them.
I too thought the 'sawdust' was a perfect detail.

Thanks everyone! Both kids loved their cakes, so a success on both counts.
The waves are a technique called "petal frosting" which is easy but time consuming. I pulled a bit of icing and tinted it dark dark blue and just kept adding more and more light icing to it as I progressed up the cake to give it that watery colour change. Turned out good I think!

The funniest thing about the tool cake is that when it was cut all the boys at the party wanted a piece with the sawblade or a nail in it! I was like, it's just fondant! With dried spaghetti in it! But they wanted it anyways. Kids! Tongue
