I've made quite a few and I prefer polyfil.  If the base needs to be weighted so that the cushion will stand up, I like sand.

What a terrific idea...I save all of the little styrofoam inserts that come with some of our products at work...I think they would make great little pincushions!

I bought a little something that I think is going to make my pincushion a bit different...I love taking inspiration from others but I am trying to make it special for my partner... Cheesy

Is there a special way to make sure the sand doesn't leak out?  I'll need to weight my pincushion and I was thinking of using lentils but don't know if they'll be heavy enough...

I too use sand. The thread catcher/ pin cushion uses sand.  I make an inner liner of fabric for the sand for those.  It also seems to help weight then to keep upright.  I also have the pellets and fiberfill, just depends on the shape.

The strawberry shortcake was all fiber fill as it fit snug in its glass base.

I went to my goodwill looking for something and I may have hit pay dirt.  I found a cute ______ that I think will work well for a themed type pincushion.  Hope to get started later tonight or tomorrow with my rough draft.  I have a back up plan if this does not work out though!

Try using lead shot--very heavy...or even marbles or pebbles...you can buy lead shot at any sporting good or fishing store...and it is rather cheap...it is also called buckshot...at our local hardware store you can buy it by the
cup...

Sometimes you can find old weights at diving shops that can be torn open to use the pellets from the soft weights...for free! Cheesy

That's perfect!  You've heard "One good turn deserves another" - in our case, it's "one goodwill deserves another" !! Roll Eyes

You guys, I did a bit of research on possible lead poisoning but it seems that the "lead" used in buckshot is not really lead anymore...it is still heavy...there is little danger but if you have kids, you might want to double check that the "lead" shot is not really real lead!  Thanks!  I don't want anyone harmed by making cute pincushions!! Cheesy
