So I'm way too easily manipulated by my cat. He likes to sit on my lap, especially in cold weather. When I disturb him to do crafty things or make tea, he complains bitterly. I should just let him curl up on the sofa - I mean, we don't live in Siberia or anything. But I can't listen to the plaintive mews.

The plan was to make him a heated bed. I hate the tangles of electrical cords so necessary for modern life, and leaving a heating pad unattended for long periods of time seemed like a bad idea, So I just expanded on the idea of those little rice-filled pocket handwarmers people craft in those areas where it really does get cold enough to complain about. The pillow is made from a linen skirt I got in the dollar bin at the thrift store and five pounds of rice. There is a faux fur pillow cover because Mr. B has a thing for faux fur. Under it is a folded blanket for bulk, a sheet of Styrofoam cut down from some packaging, and some aluminized bubble-wrap insulation that was left over from a home improvement project.

The box was secondhand from a very nice wine shop. Classy as it was, it still needed something though, and the brown in the pompom trim matched the pillow cover. Besides, it's really not a craft project unless the glue gun comes out at least once...

The legs were old balusters that I got at a really neat architectural salvage yard. I painted them to match the trim, then screwed and glued them to the box.
Once everything was assembled, the rice pillow got six minutes on high in the microwave.
Mr. B approves!

This is amazing, my cat would love it.  It looks so classy too - I love the wee details of the trim and the bannister legs.  Great job!

Thanks for all of the positive comments, everyone!

I highly recommend this project for other people unable to stand up to their cats. Mine has gotten so fond of his that he has stopped meowing at me quite so much to sit down. Now stands on his throne and meows when his rice pillow needs a warm-up!

Oh, man.  My cats would love this.  I'd have to make one big enough for all three!  They like the warmth, and my middle one likes to be up off the floor.  He'll even lay on a sheet of paper just to not be on the floor.  Silly cats... This is awesome, though.  Seriously.  I'd never thought of a heat pack for a cat bed, but that's perfect.  My boyfriend tend to keep it pretty cold in our apartment, and now that we live in a basement, it's unlikely to ever really get warm in here.  I'm sure they'd appreciate somewhere warm to lay.

Will sew for stamps!  Or swap stamps for fabric!  Send me a message for a personal swap!

You did such a great job!  It looks awesome.
With shorter legs my little dogs would love something like this.

I am interested in personal swaps!

There are a lot of different possibilities with other trims, legs, paint, etc.

What an amazing project! It's looks great.
My cat is terrible spoiled but I don't think he'd go for it. Somewhere I have a picture of him as a tiny kitten sitting NEXT to a heating pad. It was dead winter in Michigan and he was like...a 3 lb cat.

My Shop I am also looking for some personal swaps. Check my profile for more info! My

So clever! I should make one for my older dogs (with lower legs in the bed).
