I recently acquired the excellent book Stich Alchemy by Kelli Perkins and immediately became obsessed with making her crazy quilted paper cloth bookmarks.  So of course I did....

The process for making the paper cloth is much like what PurpleHeather details in her fabulous tutorial

I used a base of cotton muslin well soaked with diluted glue then topped with 2" torn strips of pattern paper-I really like the graphic qualities of the pattern markings (and I also can pick up old patterns for 10 cents at the thrift store!)  On top of that I brushed on more diluted glue and random bits of torn text/letters/maps.  Then the top layer of more torn strips of pattern paper.

After the sheets dried the real fun starts I laid on base coats of paint then spattered/stamped/stenciled/inked/sprayed glitter ink/wrote on with white paint pen/gilded with joss paper.  Basically I left the pages on my work table for a couple of weeks and just kept adding to them Grin

Then I cut some tiny random shapes, about 1 1/2" - 2".  After loading my machine with LOTS of black thread, I started zig zag stitching the pieces together in a random pattern building from the middle out.  It takes a long time to make a sheet but its very zen and forgiving of my less than stellar sewing skills....

After I felt I had a large enough sheet and being thoroughly sick of sewing tiny pieces together, I measured and cut a rectangle then cut the book mark strips in 1 1/2" increments (they are 5" long)   The strips were zigzagged around the edges to a backing of wool felt with an eyelet punched on top.  Done!  Here's a close up so you can see the texty bits still showing through...

For years I've used the same method without the cloth to make collage paper, with a base of a large sheet of tissue paper/random scrap paper/topped with more tissue paper.  I do think the paper cloth is much more sturdier though.  Both are fun to make Grin

I have this book also and it's sooooooo fun to look at and try new things. I have mainly used little bits for dolls and art journal stuff. I fuse to used dryer sheets  so that's why I only have little bits to use!

Will definitely have to try stitching! And I now obsessively save every scrap of tissue paper that comes in packages and from Macy's and cheapo colored tissue paper from the dollar store.

These turned out beautifully! I love the technique you used and can imagine it working for all kinds of projects. Your stamping, inking, splattering, glittering, painting process worked perfectly Smiley.

I love working with text and rarely sew....but being able to make your own collage "fabric" with all the text and colours is pretty fun.  Check out PurpleHeather's tutorial, she uses all kinds of stuff in making her paper cloth its very nifty Smiley

These are beautiful!

I have been experimenting with making fabric paper, but have been afraid to gum up my sewing machine by sewing through the glue and various textures (paint, glitter, gel mediums etc). Did you have any concerns or problems sewing through this?

Admittedly I am a little rough with my machines (I'll try sewing through almost anything Roll Eyes ) I had no problems at all.  I made sure to use a new needle and a medium wide zig zag stitch-even with a cloth base I was still kind of freaked that close stitching would make a tear. The needle does make a permanent hole in the "fabric" so crazy quilting is perfect for my shoddy "I meant to do that" sewing skills Cheesy  The paper I made was fairly flat with mostly paint and ink embellishment though so I'm not sure how it would go with glitter and thicker embellishments.

Well that is good to know! So, new needle, only through areas without thick embellishments or glitter, and worry less about my machine! got it! Thanks!  Cheesy

I keep seeing the fabric paper stuff and I must say I am intrigued.  I love the patchwork look on them and honestly thought they were polymer clay when I clicked on them from the home page and I was trying to figure out how the stitching was done.  I love the result and it look amazing.
