i created this portrait of my grandmother and my daughter in about a month. i usually work in colored pencils, with heavily worked detail. for this i wanted that smooth brightness of watercolors. i did several sketches and studies before the final piece. it didn't get quite where i wanted with paints alone, so i added watercolor pencils and colored pencils. i really love the derwent inktense pencils.

i still have a lot of learning to do. i like exploring with the looser style, so i am planning to do another portrait but much closer up so i'm not fighting to create fine detail.

it is an 11x13 on heavy weight watercolor paper. the backside of the paper was more smooth than the front, so after playing with both i was happier with the smooth paper.

That's very  nice. What are the dimensions of this? I wish I had even 1/4 the painting/drawing skills you have. I would be neat to see a side by side of this and your next work in progress.
