Harry Potter Craftalong ~Spring Semester 2013~

~*Began March 1, 2013*~
~*Ended May 31, 2013*~

Spring Semester lasted 91 days
30 Students were enrolled at Hogwarts
362 Projects were Posted.

That is an amazing average of around 4 projects a day and 12 projects per student!

Welcome to Hogwarts!
The Harry Potter Craftalong (HPC) is not your typical craftalong; we are gathered here to celebrate our love of crafting and the Wonderful World of Harry Potter.  In the HPC you will be completing classes and challenges with your skills in crafty magic.  These classes and challenges all have HP centered themes, but your crafts do not have to be “Harry Potter."  Your mission, as a student at Hogwarts, is to complete at least one class or challenge during this semester.  You may join any time during the semester.  I hope you join us; the HPC is a great way to stretch your crafty muscles, meet HP crafters, and have fun!

~*HPC PROJECTS*~
---The HPC is here to help us each finish projects and to explore new challenges as we better our crafting skills.  Prompts and guidelines are there to help stimulate creativity and growth; the size and complexity of the project submitted should reflect a level of personal growth and challenge over the time you spend in the HPC.
---Projects for the HPC should represent your best crafty skills.  Take pride in your work.  Classes and challenges should take a minimum of 30 minutes to make.
---A project can only be submitted for one class/challenge (the same project cannot be entered in multiple categories) unless noted in prompt (it will be CLEARLY noted if allowed).
---Projects must be turned in within the timeframe designated by the type of assignment or challenge.
---For a project to be counted, it must have a picture or picture link included.  If your item is a private piece, you may submit a picture link to one of the headmistresses.
---There is SO MUCH to do in the HPC.  Do not feel like you have to craft everything.  Think of the HPC as a "Choose Your Own Adventure".  Craft what inspires you, but don't try to do everything and get burned out.  Keep in mind the wise words of Deputy Headmistress jennieingram, "It does not do to dwell on lists and forget to craft."

~*HOW TO TURN IN A PROJECT*~
For each assignment/challenge, use this header:
Class/Challenge/House Pride:
House:
Project Name:
Project Page Link (if available):
Brief Description: (how it fits the requirements, pattern/techniques/recipe used, any fun tips, etc.)
Project Picture:
Feel free to also include your house and any storycrafting you've created for your project.
---You can add more than one project to your post, but a header must be used for each project.

~*HPC FAQs*~
---How long is a semester?  Semesters are as follows: FALL-September, October, November; WINTER- December, January, February; SPRING-March, April, May; SUMMER-June, July, August
---When can I join?  You can join anytime in the semester.
---Do I have to sign-up to join this craftalong? No, all you have to do is post in the thread a hi or completed project post.
---How do I complete a semester/earn my year? To complete a semester/year, you only have to complete one class or challenge during the semester.
---What timezone do we use?  We use Headmistress pinkleo's Central Timezone (Texas time).
---Do you sort me?  NO, you will decide which house you belong to, but you can only choose one.
---I have a problem or question; who can I ask?  You can send a Personal Message (PM) to Headmistress pinkleo.  You can also ask specific questions to HPC staff.  And you can post your question in the thread; our students are very helpful!
---Can I turn in something I did earlier? With a very few exceptions the answer is NO!  You must complete your project during the current semester. Exceptions are Detention and OWLs; look for details about these projects in their information posts.
---Are we swapping? No, this is not an organized swap.  We are just encouraging crafting with a HP twist.  But if you enjoy swapping, keep an eye out for HP themed swap info in our thread.
---Do I have to craft all the classes and challenges? NO, you pick what you inspires you.  There is tons to choose from so choose your own HP Craft Adventure through the castle.
---What kind of projects are allowed for classes/challenges? If Craftster has a category for it, then it is a viable HPC project.  And since Craftster has a board for almost everything, your choices are vast.
---Does my craft project have to be Harry Potter themed? NO, if your item fulfills the class/challenge prompt, then it can be posted in the HPC.  Above all, we are here to encourage crafting.
---What is the Magic Quill?  Ah, you must have heard about that from your headmistress.  She is referring to updating the completed project list by using the tinyurl website.

~*House Points*~
~*Your triumphs will earn you points*~
Points System
15 points for a Class Assignment & Challenge*
100 points for OWLs
150 points for NEWTs
10 points extra for SPEW aka Charity Items

House Points Guidelines
--- *You cannot double dip for Class & Challenge points.  For example, if you turn-in a project for Herbology & Geminio, then you would get 2 badges but only 15 points for the project.
---You cannot get credit for a class or challenge twice.  For example, if you turn in 2 Alchemy projects, then you will only get points for the first one.
--- SPEW points are extra credit.  You can earn SPEW points for each project you turn in if it goes to charity.  You do not have to give the charity's name, just that you are donating to a certain cause.  (I happen to know that some Battered Women's Shelters don't like their names/locations posted.) SPEW projects must be clearly marked with SPEW to earn extra points.  I suggest adding it to your header.  Also, SPEW project can be turned in as stand-alone projects; they will earn 10 points.  Unlike most projects, you can turn in more than one PEW project for points.
---HPC Challenge Points do not include House Challenges.  For Example, a Gryffindor Lion-along project would not count for points unless it also fulfills a HPC Class or HPC Challenge.
--- To determine House Cup Winner, an average from the points accumulated per house and the number of members per house.  If there is a tie, then more than one house will win the cup.  Note, a House Member is someone who has turned in at least 1 project.
--- Don't stress over House Points, but do craft your personal best. (This varies from person to person.  And I'm not really worried about "crafting your best" bit because HPCers are amazing crafters!)

~*House Pride & House Unity*~
You can turn in as many House Pride or House Unity projects as you wish.  These are projects inspired by one of the Hogwarts Houses.  House Pride would be projects representing your house, and House Unity would be projects representing the other houses or a combination of houses.  They can be inspired by house colors, mascots, founders, heads, past members, house ghosts, etc.  Note you will get House Points on only 1 House Pride and 1 House Unity project per semester.

~*Spring Classes*~
---Alchemy: Alchemy uses chemical and physical processes in hopes that the practitioner may eventually discover a way to transform basic metals into gold. As mentioned last semester, Alchemical practices have led to the discovery of many useful things, but it also became a philosophy and was just as powerful symbolically as it was scientifically. An alchemist slaves day after day on his work, constantly refining it until one day he may reach his goal.  This is a great metaphor for any person who strives to make something great or continue to refine themselves from one day to the next. With this in mind, create something that involves chemical or physical changes with the goal of making the raw materials into more than they were before you worked with them.  Examples of physical changes: Melting, Crushing, Freezing, crumbling, molding. Examples of chemical changes: cooking, firing (as in enamels or ceramics), mixing something like resin, photography processes, acid base reactions (like the ones that make fizzy bath products).

---Apparition: This semester we will be working on Side-Along Apparition.  Side-Along Apparition is a variant of Apparition; it is used to transport two or more individuals at once.  This method may be used by adults seeking to transport underage wizards, or in some cases a licensed individual may use this method to transport an injured party.  To perform this version of Apparition, the more able party apparates with the other party holding onto their arm.  This method is recommended by the Ministry of Magic for parents with underage children to escape from danger quickly.   To demonstrate your mastery of Side-Along Apparition, create 2 or more pieces that when place side-by-side they work together, such as a set of earrings +a  necklace, 2 related ATCs, or a hat + a scarf.  (Note: Items that already come in pairs count as one piece i.e. pair of socks, pair of earrings, pair of mittens, etc.)

---Arithmancy: The first skill that you need to perform in the mathemagics of Arithmancy is addition. To show that you have acquired this skill, create something that has at least two base parts that must be added together to create your finished project.

---Astronomy: Ursa Major, also known as the Great Bear or Larger Bear, is a constellation visible throughout the year in most of the northern hemisphere.  It can best be seen in April.  Ursa Major is dominated by the widely recognized constellation known as the Big Dipper, a useful pointer toward north.  Ursa Major was one of the 48 constellations listed by the 2nd century AD astronomer Ptolemy.  It is mentioned by such writers as Homer, Spenser, Shakespeare, and Tennyson.  Vincent van Gogh represented it in his painting Starry Night Over the Rhone.  Ursa Major is also found in Greek mythology.  The tale is Zeus desired a young woman named Callisto. Hera transforms the beautiful Callisto into a bear.  Callisto, while in bear form, later encounters her son Arcas.  Arcas almost shoots her, but to avert the tragedy, Zeus turns Arcas into a bear as well.  Zeus then puts both of them in the sky, forming Ursa Major and Ursa Minor.  Honor Ursa Major in your crafting this spring by creating something inspired by this constellation.  You may use the information here or your own research as inspiration.

---Care of Magical Creatures (CoMC): Bowtruckles, also known as a Tree-Guardians, are tree dwellers.  They can be found mostly in western England, southern Germany, and certain Scandinavian forests.  Their appearance is pixie-like, bark-colored, with knobby arms and legs, two twig-like fingers on each hand, a flat face, and two small brown eyes.  This appearance camouflages them, making bowtruckles difficult to spot in their natural habitat.  The maximum height of a bowtruckle is 8".  Their favorite foods are wood lice and doxy eggs.  In fact, their love of doxy eggs spawned the saying, "On you like bowtruckles on doxy eggs."  A bowtruckle is extremely peaceable and shy.  But if its home is threatened, it will attack, using its sharp, twig-like fingers to maim or harm, usually focusing on the eyes.  It is highly recommended that you offer wood lice to a bowtruckle before removing wood from a tree. This will keep the bowtruckle’s hands happily busy.  Now, for homework, you are to create something inspired by a bowtruckle.  You may use any detail, such as appearance or ability to camouflage, in your project to complete this assignment.

---Charms: This semester we will be studying Weather-Modifying Charms.  These are a group of charms that are used to affect the weather.  They can be removed with the spell Meteolojinx Recanto.  Because Weather-Modifying Charms have an environmental impact, the Committee on Experimental Charms has conducted surveys to determine the percentage of wizards who believe that they should be regulated.  Demonstrate your mastery of a Weather Modifying Charm by crafting something that represent your particular weather, be it rain storms, snow, cloudy skies, etc. OR Demonstrate your mastery of Meteolojinx Recanto by creating something that will protect you from the weather.

---Defence Against the Dark Arts (DADA) The darker side of the wizarding world is very dangerous and powerful.  To "protect" students by not exposing them to the powerful magic that they need to defend themselves would be to commit a crime similar to Dolores Umbridge. (shudder) One of the most powerful spells you can cast to protect yourself from dementors and other powerfully dark forces are the Patronus charm. When this charm is successfully cast, an animal that has a deep affinity with your spirit is conjured and serves as your guardian in a dire situation.  It can also send messages when the time is right, or be sent to defend someone else on your behalf. For this assignment, search within yourself and find out what your patronus animal is.  Make a craft honoring it and the protection and inspiration it provides you..

---Divination: This semester we will be focusing on Cartomancy.  Cartomancy is fortune-telling or divination using a deck of cards. Practitioners of cartomancy are generally known as cartomancers, card readers, or simply readers.  Cartomancy using standard playing cards was the most popular form of providing fortune-telling card readings in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.   It is similar to tarot card reading in that various card spreads are used.  The most popular method of cartomancy using a standard playing deck is referred to as the Wheel of Fortune.  Here, the reader removes cards at random and assigns significance to them based in the order they were chosen.  Interpretation of various cards varies by region and reader; this is due to the fact that the cartomancers are reaching to the beyond by their own path.  But some common meanings can be derived.  Common symbols: Hearts- emotions and autumn, Diamonds -material goods and spring, Clubs - achievement and summer, Spades - antagonistic and winter, King-male, Queen-female, Jack-youth.  Delve into the mystical world, and create a project inpired by Cartomancy.

---Flying: A magic carpet, also called a flying carpet, is a carpet that can be used to transport persons who are on it instantaneously or quickly to their destination.  The obvious advantage of the carpet over the broomstick is that they can seat a number of people, and are no doubt more comfortable to ride. Flying carpets are particularly popular in Asia and the Middle East. The Ministry of Magic in Great Britain has put a ban on all Flying Carpets because they are classified as Muggle Objects.  It is therefore now against wizarding law to charm carpets or fly them in Britain.  Ali Bashir (a famous carpet creator), Aximinster (a popular brand of magic carpets), and Black Carp Co. (a flying carpet  taxi service) are working to reverse this law.  When questioned about the possible reversal of this law, Arthur Weasley, Head of Office of Misuse of Muggle Artefacts,  stated, “It is very unlikely that the law will ever be changed.”  For your Flying homework, you must create a project inspired by a Magic or Flying Carpet.  You may use ideas like its shape, its various patterns, or ability to hold many items.

---Herbology: A Fanged Geranium is a magical flower with sharp teeth.  The flowers aren't poisonous, but they are vicious, carnivorous plants and can literally eat a human being bite-by-bite.  Even with this fact, Fanged Geraniums are extremely popular in wizard gardens, and prized specimens are highly coveted by cultivators.  There is widespread historical speculation that the muggle “War of the Roses” actually started with wizarding neighbors arguing over a Fanged Geranium.  Alright class, today in the greenhouse, you will be not only brushing, but also flossing your Fanged Geraniums teeth.  Please have your tools at hand: Dragon Hide Gloves, Toothbrush, Toothpaste, Dental Floss, and of course your wand (An Immobilus charm will make taking care of your plants much easier.)  And for homework, I want you to use your knowledge of Fanged Geraniums to create a project that is either inspired by them, their care, or something which takes great care to make.

---History of Magic (HoM): Magical portraits are common in the wizarding world. The subjects of portraits are sentient, can speak to and with people on the outside, and they can move into other portraits in the same building, as well as visit their own portraits in other places.  At Hogwarts, the walls are filled with magical portraits.  The most notable magical portraits are the Headmaster Portraits located in the Headmaster's office. These portraits represent previous Headmasters or Headmistresses. They are honor-bound to serve the current Headmaster at all times. Several of these portraits have counterparts in other prestigous magical insitutions, such as the British Ministry of Magic Headquarters, St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries, and the Black family home at 12 Grimmauld Place.  For your History of Magic project, study the Magical Portraits within Hogwarts.  Pick one person within a portrait, and create a project inspired by them.

---Muggle Studies (MS): This class aims to acquaint wizards and witches who do not have direct contact with muggles with the way they live.  Knowing muggle ways is especially important for any student who plans to have contact with their world.  Prestigious positions, such as the Minister of Magic, must work side-by-side with muggles.  This semester we are going to study something that every muggle experiences day-to-day, and many muggles have in-depth knowledge of this subject.  We will be studying Muggle Music.  Muggle music fills the muggle world, and there are many different varieties and musicians to choose from.  Your project this semester is to pick a genre or specific piece of Muggle Music and create something inspired by it.  You must note either the song or genre when turning in your assignment.

---Potions: Amortentia is the most powerful Love Potion in the entire world. It has a different aroma for everyone who smells it, reminding each person of the things that they find most attractive. For example Hermione Granger smells fresh cut grass, new parchment, and spearmint toothpaste. Lean in, breathe deep and craft an item based on one or more of the aromas you smell.

---Study of Ancient Runes (SoAR): The runic character Wunjo (ᚹ) can be translated to mean comfort, glory, or joy. Create something that inspires this feeling.

---Transfiguration: Lapifors is a Transfiguration spell which turns small objects into rabbits, including, but not limited to, rabbit statues, salamanders and cats. The prefix "Lapi-" is from Latin lepus meaning "hare.”  And the suffix -fors (often used in transfiguration spells) is Latin for "good chance, luck, fortune, stroke, wealth, karma", though it may also come from forma (or simply English form) meaning form.  Prove your mastery of the Lapifors spell by creating something inspired by a rabbit.

~Everything O.W.L.s and N.E.W.T.s~
---Ordinary Wizarding Levels, OWLs, and Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Tests, NEWTs, are advanced crafting projects.  OWLs and NEWTs are supposed to be more complex and challenging projects.
---OWLs and NEWTs are more time-consuming than HPC classes and challenges.  There is no hard and fast rule on how many hours a project should take, because speed and difficulty levels are too subjective.  What we are really looking for is a project that will be a personal challenge to you.
---OWLs should take 3-4 weeks to complete.
---NEWTs should take more than a month to complete.
---Projects that do not take the allotted time of crafting will not be counted as complete; keep that in mind when you post your completed OWLs and NEWTs.  If you finish your OWL or NEWT earlier than expected, then craft an additional item(s) that correspond with your subject.  Add notes on how you finished earlier than expected and details about your additional crafting in your Completed Project post.
---You must propose your OWL or NEWT before starting so that we may be your cheerleaders and help encourage you during this more challenging craft adventure.
---You may only do 1 OWL & 1 NEWT at one time.  (Don’t want you to be stuck with a ton of OWL & NEWT WIPs!)
---You may propose an OWL or NEWT any time during the semester.
---OWLs and NEWTs can carry over to the next semester.
---If you decide to abandon an OWL or NEWT project, notify your OWL Examiners, and they will erase that log from their records.  Once you have submitted to have an OWL or NEWT erased, you can propose a new one.

~*HOW TO COMPLETE AN OWL*~
1. Select which OWL you would like to complete.  You may only do one OWL at a time so select carefully.
2. --AlchemyOption 1-Alchemists have, through their mystical quests, made significant contributions to our world.  These include metalworking, production of inks, dyes and cosmetics, ceramics and glass manufacture, preparation of extracts and liqueurs and the invention of gunpowder.  Honor the work of these alchemists by creating something from one or more of these contributions.  Option 2-The Four Elements of alchemy are Fire, Earth, Air and Water.  Craft a project that represents all four of these elements.
--Arithmancy: Bridget Wenlock was a famous thirteenth-century Arithmancer, and the first to establish the magical properties of the number seven.  Your OWL quest is to turn in something that involves the number seven.
--Astronomy: Option 1-Craft a star chart.  Option 2-Interpret the solar system into a craft.  Option 3-It is believed that we can only see 5% of the universe, the rest is made up of Dark Matter and Dark Energy which is invisible to us. Create something where at first glance you can only see a small portion, but when you look closer you can find the rest of the details.
--Care of Magical CreaturesOption 1-Even in the muggle world, we are surrounded by fascinating and breathtaking creatures.  Craft something inspired by an everyday animal you find magical.  Option 2-Dragons are terrifying yet awe-inspiring; craft something inspired by these magical creatures.
--Charms: Research the different charms and show your mastery of a particular charm by crafting something inspired by it.  For example, Alohomora is an opening charm; craft something that open or has an opening.  Another example, Confundus is a confusion charm; craft something you find a bit confusing.
--Defence Against the Dark Arts: Option 1-The patronus is an effective charm against dementors and to call for help when in need, though difficult to master. Craft something using your patronus animal.  Option 2-Craft something inspired by one of the DADA professors.
--Divination: Option 1-Create at least 4 items you need for a successful reading.  Option 2-Create a dream item.  Option 3-Create something inspired by the zodiac.
--Herbology:  Research magical and mundane plants, and show your knowledge by creating something inspired by one or more plants that could be found in a wizard’s or witches’ garden.
--History of Magic: Option 1-Create 4 different items, one item for each house, these items should reflect your interpretation of the characteristics of each house.  Option 2-Craft 3 items which represent 3 characters with Harry Potter.   Option 3-Craft something using a vintage pattern, material, or technique.
--Muggle Studies: We all know the Tales of Beetle Bard, but did you know that muggles have a vast array of fantastical stories?  The most fascinating are known to muggles as fairy tales.  Study these tales and craft something inspired by them.
--Potions: Option 1- Show off your ability to work with many ingredients by showcasing at least 3 different colors/pattern/textures.  Colors can be monochromatic.  A variegated yarn or one fabric swatch with various colors within it count as one color.  Option 2-Research different potions and show your mastery by crafting something inspired by it.
--Study of Ancient Runes: Option 1-Use an intricate charted design; you may create your own design for this project.  Option 2-Create something that contains 7 or more letters/symbols.  Option 3-Create a set of runes; these can be presented in one or more pieces.
--Transfiguration: Option 1-Practice your vanishing and conjuring spells by taking a large amount of supply and crafting one piece.  Option 2-Craft something with a dual purpose.  Option 3-Craft your Animagus.

~*HOW TO COMPLETE A NEWT*~

~Headmistress' Tower~
:::password: Canary Creams:::

Welcome new and old students!  As we settle into the Spring semester, I wanted to say a few words.  First, you will see me and Deputy Headmistress jennieingram mention many times about how you do not have to craft ALL the classes and challenges.  This is because we don't want anyone to feel overwhelmed and not craft along.  I can tell you now that I, Headmistress pinkleo, will not be crafting everything in the Spring HPC; what I will be crafting is those classes and challenges that inspire me.  Furthermore, all that is needed to complete the semester and a HPC year is to post one project during the semester.  I sincerely hope you find this a comforting reminder and enjoy your crafting.  Second, the Order is still seeking new members to thwart dark happenings.  Those wishing to join the Order need to head to 12 Grimmauld Place.  Also, please note that we participate in the Hogwarts tradition of House Points; House Points are explained in the first post of the HPC.  I hope you have fun this semester.  Take your time exploring the castle and all that's within; for your convenience, portkeys to various rooms have been added to the first post of this thread.  And if you ever have a question or problem, do not hesitate in sending an owl (aka PM) to me or jennieingram.  I would like to leave you with some final words, and here they are: Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak! Thank you and blessed be.

Join the Order
Challenge: The Horcrux Hunt

*WARNING: House Points Spell & Magic Quill will stop working for the hunt after the Spring.*

The Order is looking for new members to thwart dark wizards and witches.  To see if you have what it takes, the Order has devised a challenge called the Horcrux Hunt.  This challenge will test all your crafty magical skills.  Your job is to find and destroy each horcrux.  You will have many semesters to complete this challenge, but you can destroy each horcrux only once.  You may conquer the horcruxes in any order.  This challenge earns 15 House Points per horcrux, but it CANNOT be combined with any classes or challenges.  Make sure your destruction of a horcrux is clear; if it is not immediately evident, then make sure to use your explanation to make it crystal clear.  Once you have collected all the horcruxes, you will permitted to join the Order.  Good Luck Hunters!

Tom Riddle’s Diary: The first horcrux, created after Tom Riddle murdered his fellow student Moaning Myrtle using the Basilisk. It was destroyed by Harry with a basilisk fang.  To find and destroy, create something that represents or is inspired by a diary, a basilisk, or Moaning Myrtle.

Marvolo Gaunt’s Ring: The ring was handed down to Marvolo Gaunt from Cadmus Peverell.  It was gold with a black stone, later discovered to be the Resurrection Stone.  The ring was destroyed by Dumbledore with Godric Gryffindor's Sword and later hidden in a Golden Snitch for Harry to discover.  To find and destroy, create something that represents or is inspired by a ring, Dumbledore, or a snitch.

Salazar Slytherin's Locket: Owned by Salazar Slytherin and an heirloom of his family. Tom Riddle turned the locket into a horcrux and hid it in a seaside cave. It was taken from the cave, however, by a defected Death Eater named Regulus Black.  Ron first had to face his own fears before destroying Slytherin’s Locket with Gryffindor’s Sword.  To find and destroy, create something that represents or is inspired by a locket, Ron Weasley, or Slytherin.

Helga Hufflepuff’s Cup: The cup, which belonged originally to Helga Hufflepuff, was hidden in the Lestrange family vault at Gringott’s Bank. It was protected there by a Geminio curse.  It was destroyed by Hermione Granger with a basilisk fang.  To find and destroy, create something that represents or is inspired by a cup, Hermione Granger, or Hufflepuff.

Rowena Ravenclaw's Diadem: The diadem originally belonged to Rowena Ravenclaw. It was hidden in the Room of Requirement and was destroyed by Fiendfyre created by Vincent Crabbe. To find and destroy, create something that represents or is inspired by a diadem, Ravenclaw, or Fiendfyre.

Harry Potter: Harry’s scar was an unintentional horcrux created when Voldemort originally used the killing curse on Harry. Harry would have died at that original meeting had it not been for his mother’s sacrifice. The horcrux within Harry was destroyed by Voldemort himself when he used the Elder Wand to cast Avada Kedavra on Harry for a second time.   To find and destroy, create something that represents or is inspired by Harry Potter, Lily Potter, or Voldemort.

Nagini: Nagini was the last of the horcruxes.  This last horcrux was destroyed when Neville Longbottom killed Nagini using the Sword of Gryffindor.  Her death led to Voldemort's final defeat.  To find and destroy, create something that represents or is inspired by Nagini, Neville Longbottom, or Gryffindor.

May 7-May 31, 2013

The HPA has extended their annual Accio Books Campaign.  This year they are teaming up with Read Indeed, a charity created by 7th grader Maria Keller, whose goal is to donate 1 million books to children in need by her 18th birthday.  So far she has succeeded in donating over 800,000 books in the last 4 years!

Challenge Details
First, you must donate books to children in need.  These books can be brand new, or gently used, and must be age appropriate for babies through teens.  There are a few ways to donate.  You can contribute to Accio Books directly, by mailing your books straight to Read Indeed.  (Address below.)  If shipping costs are a concern, but you still wish to participate, you can donate to a local source in your area.  Either, by contacting your local HPA chapter, and dropping books off with them.  (They will ship them to Read Indeed for you!)  Or, you may donate to a CHARITY in your area.  The HPA has created a Guide to finding an appropriate charity.  Please note that your local library probably does not count!  Why?  Because nearly all donations made to public libraries are SOLD, rather than used by the library, or donated to needy children.  Organizations like Salvation Army & Goodwill do the same.  Places that might be looking for books in your area include elementary, jr. high, and high schools, childrens hospitals, community centers, homeless shelters, day care centers, etc.  I will count donations made to any of these types of charities.

Secondly, you must post 2 pictures here in the thread of your challenge submission.  One picture of the stack of books you are donating (to show the number of books & titles so that we may award the correct number of House Points, and so it is obvious they are age appropriate).  And a second photo that is your "proof of sending" or "proof of donating".  This can either be a quick pick of your books all boxed up and addressed to Read Indeed, or it can be a picture of you bringing them to a local HPA chapter, school, or charity.  Just snap a pic of the box of books on the seat of your car, on their way to their new home!  (This second pic may be posted as a thumbnail, so as to not clutter up the thread.)

House Points...
1-5 books: 5 Points
6-10 books: 10 Points
11-15 books: 15 Points
16-20 books: 20 Points
20+ books: 30 Points

Address to ship Read Indeed donations:
Read Indeed
155 Jackson Ave. N., Ste 20
Hopkins, MN 55343

Note on books for Read Indeed:  Read Indeed asks that cloth books, and any books that require batteries be avoided.  (Smells can linger in cloth books, and if a child's family can't afford books, they are unlikely to be able to afford batteries for them either.)

Note for International Witches...  Obviously mailing books to the US would be more costly to you.  Please look into participating by donating to charities in your area!

Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans
A risk with every mouthful!

"You want to be careful with these. When they say every flavor, they mean every flavor - you know you get all the ordinary ones like chocolate and peppermint and marmalade, but then you can get spinach and liver and tripe. George reckons he had a bogey-flavored one once." - Ron Weasley

Its no secret that Hogwarts students love sweets.  And teachers, Headmasters & Headmistresses have been known to enjoy their share of treats too.  Therefore, your brilliant Headmistresses have devised an epic new *series* of Mini-Challenges for you.

Every two weeks we will pull a new bean out of the bag.  Each bean will be the inspiration for a mini-challenge.  Students may complete and post a craft based on that theme to earn extra House Points, and a Badge for that challenge.  Once a new challenge is posted, the old one is gone and cannot be entered.  As with all things in the HPC, you are welcome to do any, all, or none of these challenges.  They are just a way to inspire your own magical crafting adventures.

And this weeks bean is...
MARMALADE!

"Marmalade. I like marmalade..."  This week's Bean Challenge will focus not on the contents, but the container!  To complete this Bertie Bott's Bean challenge you must craft something using a glass jar.  You can go traditional with this and try your hand at home canning by making some Persian Pickles, Mojito Jelly, Satsumas in Ginger Syrup, or Preserved Sweet Cherries.  If you're not quite up to canning yet, how about making some Beer Bread Mix, Golden Onion Soup Mix, or if you have a sweet tooth, try something like pinkleo's Twilight Treats in a Jar.  Why not grab a jar out of the recycle bin, and turn it into a tiny Jam Jar Garden or brighten someone's evening with a glowing Sun Jar?  If you have a crafty friend with an upcoming birthday, try your hand at making a Sewing Kit in a Jar.  None of those ideas suit your style?  Then how about thinking "outside the glass" and creating a Jar Quilt!

~*Detention in the Dungeons*~

This semester there will be three Detention Challenges, one for each month.  You are welcome to do any, all, or none of these challenges.  (Remember, they are just here to help get your crafty juices flowing!)  All Detention projects may be turned in anytime during the semester, regardless of what the newest Challenge is, up until the semester ends on May 31st.  (For example, you may turn in March or April challenges in May.)

March Challenge:
Landed yourself in Detention again?  Well, not to worry.  You'll be serving Detention with Prof. Sprout this month.  She needs help repotting Mandrakes.  The work shouldn't be too hard, since you've done it before in class.  Just remember to wear your earmuffs!  To complete your Detention, you must finish a WIP (Work in Progress). WIPs can be projects that you just haven't quite finished or projects that you bought all the supplies for but never got around to actually making.  If possible, post before and after pics in the bop.  So get going!  The sooner you start, the sooner you'll finish and can go back to your Common Room.

April Challenge:
Hermoine's latest batch of Polyjuice Potion being brewed in the girls lavatory is going well.  Sadly, you were late to Transfiguration twice this week when you popped in to check on it. As a result you have Detention with Prof. MrGonagall.  She has asked you to write "A responsible and well respected wizard is always on time" one thousand times.  Urgh.  Fortunately for you, just as Detention started, she was called away on a bit of business for the Order!  A quick incantation sets your quill to copying the line over and over for you, while you dedicate your own time to studying various tactics for your upcoming Quidditch game!  For this challenge, you must craft something that is just for YOU.  So often we commit ourselves to crafting for others, and never get around to the things we would like to make for us.  So go ahead, the time is yours.

May Challenge:
The semester is almost over, and the air outside the castle is warm and sweet.  Spirits are running high among the students, and sadly, you're no exception.  Prof. Trelawney has given you Detention this Saturday for giggling when she said "Uranus".  Thankfully her lessons on Divination haven't been completely useless.  Lavender Brown has predicted (accurately) that you will be dusting Prof. Trelawney's teacup collection.
