Queen of Blades T-shirt with Bleach Pen

I like casual costumes that I can wear without being uncomfortable or embarrassed to wear to a video game convention (PAXeast). My fav video game is Starcraft and the best character is the queen of blades, who is this creepy part human part bug alien. (to see her go here: http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/game/hero/kerrigan) I wanted to do something to be her but her image is a bit elaborate and kinda slutty. I remembered seeing a couple cool thing done with bleach pens so I decide to try it and I made a t-shirt that is simplified version of what the queen of blades looks like. Here's the front:



Here's what I used:


1st I made a sketch of the design and then I sketched it on the shirt in chalk:


Then I went over the chalk with the bleach pen and let it sit for ~10 minutes:


Then I squirted on vinegar to neutralize the bleach reaction and cleaned off the bleach in the sink with cold water and soap. Then I hung it up to dry:


I'm not sure why it came out so part I put the gel on is still purple with bleach outline?
I'm also wondering how to clean the bleach off without getting it on other part of the shirt, which left red spots?

I've never done bleaching or bleach stenciling, but I can take a gander at why the words are still purple.  I bet the chalk provided a resist, not letting the bleach go through to the fabric. 
I kind of like how it turned out, it's distressed looking.
