I just finished this a couple hours ago, and I love it to death.

I knitted the whole hat portion, and I've made a dozen of these hats already, but all with different beards. this one us by far my favourite.  It was a preorder from a friend around Valentines day, and I started it yesterday, and finished it off today.  I can tell you that the beard portion of the hat took what felt like the longest, but was only about 3.5 hours.  it's fully filled in because I felt it was too skimpy otherwise and the beard ends didn't flow well.  I also included 6 braids in the beard and have finally perfected my horn pattern.

I've seen some tutorials on different beards, and most of them were fairly skimpy with no structure behind it, or had a canvas, that i couldn't find and didn't really want to use.  I used my original beard pattern for my hats and looped double strands of yarn through the stitchs in layers.  I think I used somewhere in the neighbourhood of 600 strands of 18" yarn (just 2 colours of yarn wrapped around my 18" clear drafting ruler hundreds of times)  my friend has already seen the photo of it and can't wait to wear it out.

Thank you. I try Tongue each hat I get faster.  I think my original viking hat took me 12 hours to knit, then I've worked it down to about 3

Thanks.  I thought that one colour would have been too flat, and I ended up running out of the darker orange just as I was putting the last strand on.

I unfortunately won't be the one wearing this out personally.. I made it for a friend who ordered it off me last week.  I'm sure he's excited about it.

I love it! And thank you for the information about the eard. I will try to make one. Do you use pure woll, or something else?

I actually use acrylic yarns.  I find them to be less itchy and easier to clean.

Could you possibly make a tutorial on how to knit the base for the beard? I want to make one for a friend and the canvas thing looks uncomfortable to wear. It looks more sturdy, but... You know. Made out of plastic. This way seems like a MUCH better idea!

my base is actually crocheted.  I just made up a basic beard pattern, but you can find them on ravelry.
