These are the mini-canvases I made for my awesome swap partner lesleyhappyheart (and it's her photo above, since it is so much clearer than my own - I hope she doesn't made me borrowing it)

they are both made from a broken book - it arrived at out charity shop perfectly new but with no cover which means we can't sell it, but the pages are still very white and not discoloured with age. I love it when we get them, as I'd feel too guilty to use a new book!

the matte varnish I used (that stuff that is supposed to go on oil / acrylic paintings) made the book paper go sort of translucent in splotches and you can see the turquoise tissue paper through it - which I liked in some places, but meant I had to go back and put some layers of plain white underneath other spots. I have no idea why that happened - I suppose it's a reminder to do a tester next time! - any one have any clues what may have caused that?

I'm not too experienced with collaging, so I kept the design quite simple - I hope you guys like it, and I'd love any comments or ideas for improvements

They are indeed lovely! I really like all the different colour hearts Smiley

It's definitely worth testing out varnishes on a scrap of the paper beforehand as book paper can vary quite a lot in it's absorbency and reaction to paints and varnishes.
