Here is a brooch I made for the local bead society's competition.  We were each given a metal filigree circle that was required to be in the completed design.  I used it as a base to secure the rest of my piece, and it can be seen on the back of the pin.  The only other rules were that we use at least 10 beads, and the design must be our own.

Siren mythology appealed to me for this design.  They lured sailors with their beautiful song, yet they were dangerous creatures.  I wanted to incorporate the weird into a beautiful beaded piece.  The blue fringe and rings represent sea elements of coral and suckers on the grasping tentacles of squids and octopuses.  The eye symbolizes the enticing gaze of the Siren.

This is the first time I have colored metal components.  It pleased me to be able to match my metal materials to my beads and to free myself from limited commercial color treatments.  I also found that adding an element in an unconventional way can be tricky, however that is part of the journey in creating your own design.  Attaching the ringed corona required more labor than I anticipated and required me to alter my preconceived image of the finished piece.  I am fond of the extra color the blue coral fringe adds, and I am pleasantly surprised by the steampunk feel the pin conveys.

Truly "eye"-catching! That was a great idea. Smiley

Thanks guys.  My pin did not place in our competition.  The pieces in the contest were beautiful, and I'm happy to have entered this year.
