I am really wanting a men's zippered vest, but being that I can't afford to go out and buy one and I am into sewing lately I've decided to draft my own pattern.  I'm using this ehow article: http://www.ehow.com/how_4423824_make-vest-pattern.html.  Do you have any advice or tips that could help me?

Ralph Pink offers a free men's zippered jacket pattern block. He describes it as being based on a men's medium basic block, so if your chest is 38" and you're of average proportions, you might not have to do any altering at all (other than leaving out the sleeves and finishing the armholes appropriately). Otherwise, it will give you a good idea of the shapes you'll need to make your vest. Ralph's patterns are all full-size for printing at a copy shop, but I think the latest Adobe Acrobat (and maybe Adobe Reader?) has a built in tiling feature so you can print it at home.

Another potential resource is the hoodie vest drafting instructions from the Weekend Designer. He shows you how to draft to your measurements from scratch for a select type of garment, in this case a sleeveless zippered hoodie.
