hhhmmm...thinking about joining, but I have a question.  If it fits in a hoop and has some thread, would it work for this round?  SO like, could one do macram, including something not thread of course, and mount it in a hoop?  It just says embroidery or cross stitch, so I just wanted to make sure before I sign up.  I might still sign up, if the embroidery can be by machine....

To all past swap partners....If something I made you fell apart in some way, it would be helpful to me if you PMed me and told me about it.  Sometimes, I try new things, and if they fail, it helps me to know

I speak with no authority at all, but I think that sort of thing sounds awesome. I have  couple of not traditional hoopla technique ideas as well, that I was considering depending on my partner and how up for that sort of thing they are

In a previous round I used needle felting instead of any kind of stitching. I bet whatever you do in a hoop would be awesome. I think it mostly depends on your partner.

Hey Suereal,

So, this round of hoopla is a bit experimental, not just thread implies a lot of things, which may allow for a bit more freedom than in other rounds.  That being said the debate around machine embroidery and hand embroidery is brought up almost every round.  I think some people can view it negatively because they are taking the time to hand stitch something for you, and in reponse they get something by machine.  It doesn't feel like the person gets the same amount of energy put into a piece. I think if you did macrame and put it in hoop, that would be cool, especially if you incorporated a bit of embroidery into it...  I think in this round of the swap the lines can get a little blurry... however, I don't feel comfortable saying that you can do machine embroidery. I don't think that the hoopla swap is about machine embroidery, I think it is about sharing the enthusiasm with others about hand stitching. That being said I would love for you to join the swap, perhaps you could experiment with a little hand embroidery?

Any other thoughts from the folks out there on this topic?

My personal opinion - I have nothing against machine embroidery, I love receiving it in other swaps, but I sorta feel hooplas should be about doing it by hand.

I looked up macrame and I think if you made something like that and hand tacked it down on fabric into a design and framed it in a hoopla, that would count as an element that is 'not just thread'.

I have the same leanings about hoopla's being done by hand and being mostly embroidered or cross stitched. With that said, with this round, I would be okay with some machine stitching. I have machine stitched on a hoopla to add bands of fabric or to make a quilt type background to do hand embroidery on... I think most people would be okay with something like that.

I have an embroidery machine and I've used it to make people things for swaps, but the hoopla rounds, to me, bring us back to the art of hand stitching.

I really hope you join! This is such a fun craft and I know you will rock at it!

I was trying to do a search for past hoopla galleries, but I'm having trouble. Would someone be able to point me in the right direction? I'd like to look at past works to see what people have done.
