I'm just beginning my journey in soap-making.  Took a class on it, and I fell in LOVE.  I got a really lovely recipe from the class, but there is one problem...I don't want to use palm oil because a lot of it comes from the rainforest!  What would be a good substitute for palm oil? I was thinking maybe increasing the shea butter, but I wasn't sure.  I tried searching for more information on this on craftster, but came up empty-handed.  Any advice?

Vegetable shortening, ie hydrogenated soybean oil, (Crisco) is an awesome substitution for Palm Oil. It's cheaper, more readily available, and makes harder, less drying soap in my opinion. I switched a few years ago in an emergency situation, on the advice of my friend Nymeria, who used to co-moderate this board with me, and I'm never going back!
