I found a cute pattern a while back that used 4 charm squares per block (each one being a flower petal). I just happened to have a layer cake, only partially used that would work awesome, since cutting a ten inch square in quarters give the 4 five inch squares needed! I decided to make this for my mom for Christmas. Well, I was able to finish the top, and wrapped that up and gave it to her, but I finally got the whole thing done yesterday! The colors are a bit washed out so I might take some more pictures later.

The layer cake I had was a line that was a couple years old from designers Bonnie and Camille, and since I had used part of it I needed to buy a little more fabric to finish the quilt. Of course, after searching the entire store, I found something that matched well enough...from Bonnie and Camille's current line. D'oh! That additional fabric is the one I used for the giant flower, the binding, and the strip across the back.

The original pattern had each flower block being made up of the same fabric for all 4 petals, but I mix and matched some so that one petal in many of the flowers was a different pattern in the same colorway. I love doing that!

Also, the original pattern did not have a giant flower, but I added that to save on extra piecing, and to provide a focal point for the quilt.

I pieced the back with the same green I used on the front border (it's hard to tell, but the dark green matches the dark green on the leaves on the fabric), a blue/green print I found in my stash that matched well, and a thin strip of the orange floral just to break the green up a bit.

I did Wonky Argyle quilting, which is my go-to quilting when I think straight lines will be too harsh. My friend Cherri came up with it~

What a cute quilt!  Charm squares are so versatile.  I love the big flower - it was a great idea.
