Have you seen this tutorial?

Also, have a look around the furry community. Those are people who dress up as animals for role-playing purposes. Matrices.net has some great tutes (don't recall how I originally ended up there Tongue) and I also just found a wire-based tute on DeviantArt.

A good base for a head is a skateboarder's helmet.  We use this kind in our mascots and bear costumes:  http://www.triple8.com/shop/product/triple-eight-brainsaver-rubber-helmet-with-sweatsaver-liner

This keeps the head stuck to your head through action moves.
