Ok, I'll try to unconfuse myself enough to explain my problem.  I understand that in a lace pattern there should be an increase (YO) for each decrease (K2TOG or SSK), but where I get confused is that they occur over three stitches/loops, but the chart only shows this over two squares.  When I try to stitch up the pattern the open spaces don't end up where they are supposed to be.  This is the chart I am trying to work in repeats long enough for a scarf.

The boxes in a chart represent an action, they're not a stitch until you're done with a row. So a box for a yo shows that you make it, but it doesn't use a stitch. The decreases take 2 stitches but result in one - the box tells you to dec, but doesn't show 2 boxes. On the chart you linked there's a symbol for the yarn that says you make it, then the next one is for the decrease. The yo is just a wrap around the needle and doesn't include a stitch, working the decrease is what anchors it, or the next stitch that's shown in a pattern.

OK; so what I was doing was to YO, Knit one stitch and then the decrease, but what I should have done was YO, work decrease

I guess I was adding an extra knit stitch into the equation?

If that is correct I think the light bulb came on.  Thanks!

It sounds like you figured it out.  Happy knitting.
