I finished this picture a couple of days ago - it was inspired by a friend of mine while discussing the apparent lack birds being featured in my work.  Everything is better with a bird on it.  If you don't believe me, google Portlandia 'Put a bird on it'.  So funny.

beautiful.

What do you use for a background and do you do the image in the same colour paper on the background?  I don't see any white peeking through, and your colours are so strong.

I use art boards as my backing (most of the time) and I often times begin by doing a painting, drawing or some combination prior to rolling (which are awfully bad btw). I don't believe I have ever quilled over a white backdrop. I almost always deviate from my plans however as I get going and I usually paint in contrasting colors. I do not like to just quill over a picture but prefer to 'paint' with the paper.  I love bright colors.
