Apperance of Double Crochet Starting Edge

Hi there,

I'm having a little bit of trouble searching for this online and have been getting a lot of hits about double crochet borders, so I apologize if I missed this somewhere.

I'm new to crochet, and I'm confused about what the bottom edge of a piece of double crochet should look like once the starting chain of stitches has been worked into with double crochet. The bottom edge of my double crochet stitches does not have the nice "little v" like single crochet or half-double crochet. The v shape is present on the top of the stitch where you would begin to crochet for the next row.

In all cases, I am inserting my hook under both of the top loops.

I quickly took two photos to show the difference I'm talking about. Hopefully they're clear enough

You've got to work your stitches into the back "hump" of the chain.

Yep, what she said, lol.  Do it for sc, hdc, dc, they should all look the same as long as you're working in the same loop.

I wonder if you are looping back under the chain to grab another loop instead of wrapping FIRST, then going under...that would explain why you have two threads in your chain..Loop yarn, go under chain, go through two loops, go through two loops...

If you do first row as single crochet would you get the result you want?
