everyone has been making such lovely things Smiley Those pillowslips are so bright and cheerful, what great fabric choices Cheesy

I'd like to pick all your brains.....in my family we are doing a 'budget Xmas' again this year -  spending no more that 15-20 per person (sweets not included), charity shop finds are cool and making stuff is too but must come from your existing stash.

So, you remember I made the Tartan Gator statue for my Sister? Well I thought for xmas I'd like to make her 'tartan gator socks' (Yeah, I know, I never do things the easy way!!  Roll Eyes  ) so I was thinking that I would knit plain socks in an undyed cotton yarn I have in my stash and then paint/dye the tartan pattern on them. My question is have any of you experience in the best way to paint a pattern on a fabric/woven/knitted surface and what materials to use. I was thinking Sharpies (something I have never worked with) but didnt know how colourfast/washable they would be.

any ideas/thoughts/suggestions??

Im also working on a large present for my mum (cant say here in case she reads this) and perhaps knitting some bunting for my dad's 'shed'. 10 weeks to go and counting!  Grin

I am now up to ten hats for the 500 Hats Charity! I will be making more this week and then dropping them off at the local drop point next Monday. They were worried that they would not make the 500, but they have over 1,000 already! This has helped me reduce my yarn stash and help out a good cause. Win win! I'll be posting a picture of the hats at the end of the week or so.

Love the pillowcases, and what a great idea for kids in the hospital!

bushbaby--I meant to answer you earlier...I think it would be very difficult to paint yarn once it is made into a project...it is absorbent so I think it would run into the yarn next to it...maybe you could dye portions and weave something for her in a tartan, using a simple loom?

Dye a portion of your yarn in each color you need..maybe you could do a mug rug size for her of even turn it into a cup cozy or a book cover of some sort...even a small purse?

I did think about that but nah, to easy Smiley I have tried a small sample peice using some fabric markers I had (not in the right colours though) and it didnt actually run to much. I just wasnt sure if sharpies are machine washable once used on fabric.

Sharpies will bleed out if alcohol gets on them. Used to intentially do that to achieve a tie dye effect.

I got an autograph on a tshirt once where they used Sharpie.  I loved that shirt, but had to stop wearing it because the Sharpie washed out just a little bit every time I washed it... I stopped wearing it when I thought that one more wash would erase the signature.

Yep, more mirrors. A vanity mirror and a couple of compacts this time. I also have a few other projects half done-and some of them aren't even mirrors! O.o
