Doctor Who crochet things for babies

A couple of friends of mine (who are MASSIVE nerds, both scientists, and lovers of all things Doctor Who) are expecting a baby girl in May. YAY! So excited. Anyway, I told them I wanted to make them a baby blanket, and the first thing they said was ". . . can it be a TARDIS blanket?"

The only TARDIS blanket patterns I've seen have all been HUGE afghan projects, and I've neither the time nor the money to commit to that big of a project (plus it'd be huge for the little one). So my plan was to make them a simple, pretty baby blanket, and then make some other Doctor Who-related thing for the baby.

So I'm looking for ideas! I need something that's safe for the little one, clearly. Things I've considered are a plushy TARDIS or a Tenth Doctor doll (both parents are big David Tennant fans). And though this is mainly looking for crochet things, I'm open to other types of crafts, too. Please and thank you.

You could do a Dalek rattle! Make a funny marshmallow shape, shove a jingle ball in the dome, stuff, and sew to one of those rattle rings that's popular to crochet.

On the baby blanket front, you could just make it TARDIS blue... And if you made it swirly, you could say they can claim that it's the baby's name written in circle Gallifreyan...

I also am a big Doctor Who fan!  I've come across quite a few different Doctor Who themed crochet patterns/items. 

I love this amigurumi of the 10th Doctor - free on ravelry.  I've made one myself and it works up really quick (I made one over a weekend).

Here's a pattern for a Tardis blanket, http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/doctor-who-tardis-blanket, you could probably do some adjustments to make it baby-sized, so it wouldnt' be quite so overwhelming!
