This dress actually started off as a shirt that was cut a little long, and then I decided to add the horizontal band to the bottom. Id never worn (or was interested in) a sack dress before, but I feel pretty chic and easy when I wear it.

This dress pattern is designed for striped jersey, and except for the contrast bands, the dress is all one piece. The back, sleeves, and front piece is shaped sort of like a Y, and the only seams are at the center front and at the sides. Needless to say, this pattern took a few tries to develop and Im pretty proud of it.

This is so cute, hangs well, and with your hat has a distinct flapper vibe.

I am increasingly convinced that you are just about the cutest thing to have ever walked the earth. I love this dress, it's so stinkin' adorable, and as usual impeccably well constructed. Matching those stripes so perfectly would have actually made me flip out and stab people in the face with a spoon....

The seduction is proceeding as planned.

I make striped leggings as a business, so I've had tons of practice when it comes to matching up stripes without basting (sewing on the serger). They're usually at least 90% accurate. And since I'm sewing with stretchy jersey, if I notice my stripes aren't quite lining up at one point, I can pull the fabric so that they are perfect in just a few inches.

For this dress, I basted on my sewing machine using a long straight stitch before serging. Also, I sew the neck band on before the center seam. The side seams don't match up at any point, because the stripes are going in different directions.

I think I'm going to be making a few more of these dresses and shirts for a friend soon, which is exciting because I love this pattern! If that happens I will remember to take in-progress shots... maybe.
