Knitting my new winter hobby

I have decided to start my new winter hobby - knitting but would like any suggestions on where people would recommend a beginner to start?

A great site to explore is Knitting Help - http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/learn-to-knit Besides videos on basic stitches, there's ones on increases, decreases, how to knit in the round and other techniques, and the Glossary page has most of the terms you'll find in patterns, many of them with videos that aren't in the other sections.

I don't recommend a scarf, they take too long. Try a wash cloth or a small bag first.

I agree with not starting with a scarf.  It gets so boring.  When I teach people to knit I have them just knit a strip long enough to seam together for a cowl.  If you make mistakes it hides them pretty well too. 

You will also want to check out www.ravelry.com.  It's a free site with lots of patterns, forums and other good stuff.

Debbie Stoller's books are a good place to start, or Elizabeth Zimmerman's.  Both are available at most libraries or books stores.
