Hm.. Sue, you just keep on going with this girl.  You are a remarkable font of knowledge! I may be going the other way, with some tea, maybe coffee staining to get a nice aged look.

And don't forget good old Rit dye - I bought some of the liquid kind at the supermarket for about 3.89/bottle, I think, and it is super fast to dye fabric. I use a ziploc bag in the sink. You also "paint" it on areas you want to age.

as far as staining/distressing, i am gonna try the following (after a bunch of research, this seems to be the consensus):

--create the doll from muslin or similar, and prime with clear gesso
--paint all details of doll in acrylic
--after acrylic TOTALLY dries, thin wash of Delta's Crackle Finish
--after crackle TOTALLY dries, use gel stain or very watery umber acrylic (using the later), and working in sections, paint this "dirty" wash over doll, wiping off almost immediately with soft cloth

Now, i have yet to TRY this...so i might make TWO dolls--the real doll, and the test doll. anything i wanna try gets done to the TEST doll first. then, if i like, use technique on real doll.

already have a sketch based on my partner's wants; anxious to get started. i am hoping to integrate a lot of elements: cloth, paint, polymer clay, ribbon, etc Smiley

WingsOfClay, it sounds like you and I are taking opposite approaches to these dolls!  There won't be any paint on mine, I'm all about the fabric.  But your idea of making a test doll is something I usually do too.

I am so glad that I am not the only one who wants to make this an experimental project! Cheesy

I actually cut up an old cotton mattress cover and started manipulating it with various dyes, inks, paints, to see what I got... Cheesy.  My first love is mixed media so to translate that to fabric is going to be fun!  I appreciate the long crafting time to try new things!  I have liquid distress ink that will probably be my fall back...seriously, I told hubby that I could end up with quite a few dolls that I keep! YAY! Cheesy

can't wait to see what we create!

and don't worry...gonna get my fabric groove on too: the fabrics and paints will work together.

also, as far as the extra, do u tend to wear jewelry? if so, what styles, colors, sizes (delicate and small, or bold, etc)?
