These make great little hostess gifts (with a matching tea towel) and work up in about a half hour.
The pattern is as follows:
Gather your supplies:
Hair ties, pony tail holders, stretchies, whatever they're called in your neck of the woods, get new ones so there's no hair stragglers on there

small amounts of yarn
size g hook
assorted buttons

start by joining a slip knot around the hair tie, chain 2, dc around hair tie pretty closely together until you meet back up at the beginning (for reference mine took 35 dc) slip stitch into beginning chain 2

row 1: chain 2 (this will count as one half double crochet) then make 8 half double crochets into next 8 stitches for a total of 9 hdcs.
(half double crochet is: yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through, yarn over and pull through all 3 stitches on hook)

row 2: *turn, chain 2, hdc into 3rd chain from hook, hdc into next 8 stitches*
rows 3-13: same as row two
row 14: (the button hole row) turn, chain 2, hdc into third chain from hook and next 2 stitches, chain 1, skip 1, then hdc into remaining 4 stitches

row 15: same as row 2 making sure to hdc into chain 1 space
finishing: chain 1 then single crochet down long side of towle holder, around the outer edge of the hair tie, around the other long edge and across the very top, bind off and weave in ends

attach button to match up with the button hole and voila! You've made yourself a dandy little tea towel holder

you can hang it on your oven door or refrigerator handle

I made mine because I have a HORRIBLE time with my dog stealing my towels from my oven doors
