Okay, so the title is actually "Seasonal Portrait Spawned of a Persephonic Resurrection") but everyone calls it the Persephone painting.

The model is a former student of mine.  She came in to class wearing this flower crown on a cold, winter day the seed of an idea for a painting was planted.

For those that don't know the myth of Persephone.....just a little background (versions vary, but here is the basic idea):
Persephone is the daughter of Zeus and the harvest goddess Demeter.  Persephone was abducted by Hades (the god of the underworld).  When Demeter learned of her daughter's abduction she mourned, causing the earth to cease to be fertile.  Zeus demanded that Hades release Persephone, but before allowing her to leave Hades fed her a single pomegranate seed which bound her to him forever.  A compromise was reached and so Persephone was sent to the underworld for 1/3 of the year.  During that time Demeter grieves for her daughter and the earth is plunged in to winter.  When Persephone emerges from Hades every year Demeter rejoices and spring comes to the earth.

This is mostly a portrait of sorts with references to the myth of Persephone thrown in.  The winter with emerging spring croci,  the dropped pomegranates (also spilled, opened fruit is a reference to the loss of innocence), the cellar as a reference to the emergence from the underworld and an unfinished reference to Cerberus (the three-headed dog that guards the gates of Hades) in the pink poodle.  I was PLANNING to have three poodles, but didn't have time to add all three before I needed the painting finished.  I haven't yet decided if I'm going to go ahead and add the other two.

The painting was finished for ArtPrize here in Grand Rapids (if you haven't heard of it check it out online....a very interesting idea for turning our city in to a GIANT gallery!) and because of other commitments I wound up having to paint the entire thing in 7 days of painting.  It's 4 1/2 feet tall and is by far the largest painting I've ever attempted, but in order to paint that large I needed to paint on canvas.  I HATE painting on canvas, but a board that size would just be TOO heavy.  There are a few things I'd like to change on it, but I suppose I COULD consider it finished (it was, after all, finished enough to hang for the show).

Oil on canvas  56" x 44"

I was in Grand Rapids during ArtPrize!  What an interesting way to showcase art all over the city!

I love your painting..the details are incredible..the stockings are my favorite...second are those crocuses peeking out from under the pine tree...I think for us mythology buffs, I would at least paint two more partial dog heads to complete the reference...which is brilliant, btw...!!!

I WAS considering giving the poodle a giant, blingy collar with a rhinestoned "C" for the reference, but you're right......I probably should add in the other two poodles.

I love the Persephone myth!  And I love your version of it! Awesome stuff!  Cheesy

PS - I agree - if you're inclined to do it, I think the other two poodles would really be great!

When I clicked on the thumbnail I was hoping it would take me to an UnRuli painting Smiley. I love this. What a great interpretation of the myth.

Wow, wow, WOW! Your paintings are always so awesome. I absolutely love how you did the fabrics, and I also love your treatment of the persephone myth!

As a mythology geek, I love this! You made a truly beautiful painting, and the references to the myth are done perfectly. This rocks!

this is my favourite of all the paintings you've posted on Craftster (which are all quite fabulous in their own right)!  I love it soooo much, all the references to the myth are wonderfully thoughtful.  and the colours are so yummy!

Awwww thanks!

I've actually decided it is not finished and am hoping to finish it over the next few days (it REALLY needs three poodles).  I also want to brighten up a few of the colors that I feel have dulled a bit.  Why the "rush" to finish?.......it has sold to a collector on the other side of the state!  I need to get the finishing touches in so it can dry and I can ship it out!

I'll try to post the final here when I'm done.
