I'm not sure where this one fits...

I'm knitting a sweater and it needs 5 buttons. I couldn't find what I wanted at the fabric store so I made my own. I have some irish coins leftover from a trip and thought they'd be perfect. I bought some mold making putty and then molded all of them, in case the one I thought would fit didn't work out. The white splotches are from the plastic, some coin shaped, some spill shaped...

Then I pour a 2 part liquid plastic into the molds and let dry. After that I wore down the excess on my concrete patio and then sanded. Paint a few layers, then sand some off so you get a nice relief. Drill holes and sew onto sweater.

More pics and info on flickr and my blog but this is the short version of it all.

You molded them? That's very creative. I would just have drilled holes in them.
Great job and beautiful result.

These are fabulous!! I like how your buttons came out and I'm really interested in the technique you used to create them. Thanks for sharing!

You have a lot more patience than me, I'd have just bought buttons.  But your's are so unique and set off the sweater so well.  I'm impressed to say the least.
