Elks4elb,

I used 17 gauge HIGH FIRE WIRE.  You can order it online or get it at an art glass supplier.  You can also use copper wire, but note that it will shed some flakes if you do.  Thus, I prefer high fire wire.  The high fire wire will darken, but it maintains it shape and durability.

How much training? - A fair bit.  We talk a LOT about safety, wearing safety goggles, using tweezers to pick up pieces of glass, etc.  The one step that I do for Kindergarten kids is to bring all of the glass to school pre-cut.  So, they simply design and stack the glass.  I glue it and take it home to fire.  They do not learn how to score or break glass.

Next on the books is to make night lights.  We made magnets and sun catchers earlier in the year and glass faces.  They love it.  It is cool to see five and six year olds empowered in the field or art beyond markers and crayons and paint.  I haven't had a Kindergarten student say they didn't want to do a project, yet....

...So...This is what insanity must be like, I thought.....and I could kind of see the appeal.
