Before my friend has to fork out for a service, We want to try and sort it ourselves.

The problem is with the needle tension. For her to get a smooth straight stitch (we havent tried the others), she has to have her tension dial on 0.

Is there a simple solution? Her tension used to be 5, but then she started having problems, and I tried today and only got a smooth stitch with no tension. She is using Guterman thread, and is using a brand new needle. She has also cleaned her machine. She has a Brother, top loading bobbin and is about 18 months old.
She is also getting a 'clonking' noise every now and then. It is like the noise my machine makes when I am trying to sew many layers at once (like when top stitching a end seam).

Any ideas of what I can try when I go back tomorrow.

double check the tension disks and bobbin for thread and crud.
Make sure the bobbin and top threads are the same weight.
Try a different new needle.  Really, sometimes new needles just aren't any good.
