each year we participate in our church's trunk or treat party. People have come up with great themes for decorating their car, and a bit of overflow into the parking space. Then kids can trick or treat safely from car to car in the parking lot. Our kids are obsessed with harry potter, so we let them pick our Hogwarts theme this year.

i painted a sillouette of the castle on a large piece of cardboard, then we filled the trunk of our van with harry potter books, pumpkins, electric christmas candles, and owls. The smaller owls are made with balloons for the body,  wings are taped on. my daughter drew the face on this one with a sharpie[url=http://www.craftster.org/pictures/showphoto.php?photo=559631]The large owl hanging from the open trunk door, is made from paper grocery bags . we also used made a sorting hat spinner from construction paper so the trick or treaters, could pretend the were being sorted into houses.
for our costumes, i found black graduation robes at goodwill, and created badges for our favorite houses from felt, fusible web, and embrodery floss. sorry, no one wanted to be a slytherin, but i may make on anyway to complete the set. we found white dress shirts, and black pants or skirts in our own closets, along with ties or scarves in our house colors. it was really fun coming up with ideas, and making decorations as a family. the kids are already working on ideas for next year.....something warm!

Love this idea, I always wonder how to safely do trick or treating. The owl is so cute.

it's really fun. we live in a rural area, so it's nice to have a central location. we have about 25 decorated cars, and then hot dogs and games inside the church. people vote for their favorite car, and the winning family this year did 'duck dynasty'. they were all dressed in camo, and had live ducks! our youth group did 'angry birds' inside the gym. they build a huge tower of boxes, plastic cups, and other junk, then kids could use a large sling shot to launch a playground ball at it. when it was knocked down, they just rebuilt.

It looks great!! I bet your kids had a blast helping with the van too. We participated in our church's trunk or treat this year for the first time. My kids had a blast decorating the trunk and handing out candy. We also live in a rural area so we never get to give out candy. It gave my 13 year old a reason to dress up and made Halloween a lot of fun for her also. Again, great job!!
