Royally adorable (Picture ridiculousness ahead, bewaaaaare...)

My then-three-year-old daughter asked to be a princess for Halloween. Yeah, reeeeeal original. So I set out to make something extra special. She picked the fabric (a lovely, medium-weight satin, and of course, only pink would do), and although it's probably the most elaborate thing I've ever sewn, it worked up fast and I had so much fun making it. There is a store-bought shirt underneath for warmth. There's also a store-bought crown; she insisted it was "the perfect one" and who was I to argue with that? The arm bands are removable, and you can see them on and off in the photos below. I did a "quick and dirty" hem, because I am hoping she will get a couple years out of it and I wanted to keep the length. My son, because he's still too little to understand Halloween and ask for anything specific, I decided would be a prince. His tunic is made in white flannel, with poly felt dagging and emblem, and a felt crown (with a little elastic on the back for comfort) -- he actually loved his costume and really enjoys wearing it. Getting pictures of him in it, well... That was a little harder.

For reference's sake, my daughter just turned 4 and she is very slight of build, and I made the standard sized 4T from the pattern. My son is 16 months and HUGE and I made a slightly shortened version of a standard 3T. For both costumes, I modified the patterns contained in Simplicity 5520.

Both of the costumes are completely legit! They don't look homemade at all. Awesome job! I especially like the way the dress sleeves look with the arm bands, and those big bell sleeves are freakin' great!

Thank you, we've never cut her hair. Pain in the butt to style, but sure looks nice when it's down (for a while, anyway -- she's a pretty wild kid and it never stays nice for long).
