My first Steampunk frock!

Here's my Halloween costume, which I started sewing on October 1st, 2012!    I used Simplicity 2172, and ended up with this an estimated 24-30 hours later:



I used a poly taffeta for the main fabric, cotton broadcloth to line the jacket, a twill for the bustier, and organza for the neckline and cuffs.  It was kind of an epic journey to complete, all smashed into one month, but I'm happy with how it turned out!

Oh nice. I really love the fabrics you chose. I get a little tired of seeing steampunk stuff only coming in various shades of brown because the Victorian era had all kinds of colors. So great fabric selection and clearly an awesome job on sewing. I love this.

Great start into the steampunk foray!  Steampunk is all about accessorizing, so add some details!  I add a few things to my steampunk costume every year.  The initial one I started with had a waist cincher and petticoat, and the quinticential painted nerf gun!  But I've added clockwork and octopus jewelry and other findings since then.  You may not want to do weapons since you're looking mighty classy.   But you can add some wicked headgear and handgear.  I like to use found objects from flea markets and things from the plumbing isle at Lowes!


I reeeeaaalllly like the vest and the way the top part fastens in the front!!

I definitely do need more accessories!  I was kind of spent after all of the sewing, but I think maybe some handgear next.  I thought about getting a "ray gun" but, I agree, it just doesn't quite fit with the look!  Good to know about trying a hardware store.  Where do you end up wearing your costume?
