I finished this dress today and I am so thrilled with it, I had to share it straight away.
The bodice is a princess line strapless bodice pattern and I drafted the sheer front and back yoke to add extra detail. The skirt is a slight A-line shape pleated in the front and back where the skirt hits the front and back bodice seams. I also made self binding for the top yoke from the red satin layered underneath the lace. The dress is also fully lined.
The dress is finished off with a black organza ribbon belt with little lace flowers cut from scraps. I also had scraps of the same lace in black from a dress I made earlier this year and cut flowers from that to add to the belt as well as two black velvet ribbon bows.
Now I just need an occasion to wear it. I am sure the upcoming holiday season will provide that.

A few more pictures here http://horrormaedchen.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/is-it-christmas-yet.html
I hope you like it as much as I do. Thanks for reading/looking.

Definitely something I will consider, though Im always a bit scared to buy custom made clothes online. My mother does a fair bit of sewing too, and it happens quite often that she needs to adjust the pattern or change things after I try it on. I have checked out your blog and your shop, and the stuff you are making is great! And reasonably priced too, no more than what Id pay in my favorite brick and mortar store  Smiley

Beautiful work. I love it! Dresses like these are very "in" right now. I've seen them at ModCloth and Anthropologie just this week.

Its not as scary as you think. If you do a lace overlay, cut all your pieces in fabric and in lace and stitch them together all the way around on your seam allowance. Then you treat them as one piece of fabric and sew as you would any other material. Lace yokes are a bit more delicate but the overlay technique is very easy. If you use contrasting colours you will get a very nice effect, too. I hope this is giving you some ideas to try out.

First of all, I am OBSESSED with this dress!! It is so beautiful!! You did an amazing job! I've been toying with a few ideas for dresses with a lace overlay but I am a very novice, self taught seamstress, so i've been a little too nervous. Second of all, I was going to ask you if the lace is just laid over the fabric and are two separate things that might just be attached at the top or something, but this was a very good explanation and actually helps me a lot, so thank you!!
What a wonderful dress, and you look amazing in it! Thanks for the help and the inspiration!

Wow! The dress looks like it's worth a million bucks! I really love it!  Cheesy
I was wondering though, how many meters/yards of lace did you use overall and how did you finish the seams on the lace?
