all the credit for this has to go to minouette, because otherwise i wouldn't have made this. she made a cactus pin cushion, and mentioned she had thought about making a hedgehog. i think hedgehogs are the coolest, so i went ahead and made one!

this is him wandering around my sewing machine:

he's a little long and thin (not as round and fat as i had intended) but i think he's still very cute.

EDIT!:
ok, as requested, here is a little tutorial, ghetto as it is, i think it'll be okay...

first, you want to cut up some felt. i just made it up as i went along, but i wish lancelot (as named by my friend) was more round now, so i guess this is the part that you would want to modify. make these pieces wider and longer if you want him fat. so cut pieces (they'll be jagged on both sides because you cut from the same piece) and sew those bitches together. i just used black on dark brown, and you can't see stitches.

next up is the face. you want to take a fat triangle, and sew it together to make a cone. just fold it in half, sew up one side, and flip it right side out. then you can add bead eyes and a felt nose or whatever tickles your hedgehog's fancy. lancelot has a tiny, hedgey smile.

after you have the face-cone, you want to sew it to the body. just overlap one end of the spikes on top of the cone and sew around it. it should cover a little over one half of the circumfrence of the bottom of the cone (because the underbelly needs room to attach too)
finally, you want to cut out a felt oval, same color as the face. this is the underbelly. sew some felt feet on there. then, you just want to attach it to the body parts you've already done. sew it up like the red lines suggest below. but leave an opening to fill up the hedgehog with stuffing. i used some left over pillow stuffing... but the pins sort of slide out easily. i'd reccommend some foam pieces, some more felt, or any fabric that pins may want to stay stuck in.

yep. that's about it. hope nothing's confusing.
let me know how they turn out!!

Lol that is so cute! I can't sew worth two craps and a nickel, mine would come out more like a hedgeBLOB. Does he curl up in fright if you come at him with a pin?

That is so awesome! I'm so glad you ran with that idea... it's almost unbearably cute, but from the photo of the actual hedgehog, clearly the unbearable cuteness adds to authenticity. Way to go.  Cheesy

Rebeccaks- after being temporarily blinded by the cuteness of the live hedgehog I noticed your pincushion. I like its simplicity- it gives it a folk art feel. Smiley

Awww, I love hedgies! We used to own one, she was so sweet, but she really didn't like us very much. I think they are so much cuter in the wild, since the ones I've known thought of nothing more than getting the heck out of captivity.

This pin cushion is definitely going on the list of things to do!

awwwww -spasm- The Cute!  I've thought for a long time that hedgehogs are adorable, especially the albino ones. If I didn't have a whole herd of cats I'd consider looking into keeping one as a pet. Such a cute idea for a pin cushion.

Now someone needs to makes a porcupine and a sea urchin.

hi all.

her name is skylar and she turned four in june.
hedgehogs are the most amazing animals. she knows my voice and follows me around. however, hedgehogs shouldn't be pets, they won't ever be domesticated and it's unfair to keep exotic animals. yes i have her, and i've had five others, all which have been surrendered to me.

if anyone is interested ever in a hedgie, don't support pet stores, there aare rescue organizations out there, some even specifically for hedgies...

oh! and she's on myspace!!!

Yes, we have echidnas here!  They are sort of the same deal as hedgehogs - ie spiny little cuties, however echidnas have a really long nose/snout cos they eat ants.  Also I think they are a little bigger than hedgehogs.  And they lay eggs too!  One of the only two monotremes, the other being the platypus.  Here is a pic, if it works http://www.giftlog.com/pictures/echidna_picture_1.htm

When I told my dad I was going to try making a hedgehog he's like "no make an echindna" cos he's obessed with native animals.  However i don't think they differences can really be expressed in a little felt pin cushion...

Oh I HAVE to make one!!! My sons elementary school's mascot is a hedgehog.

I got him a stuffed hedgehog last winter, and during a clearout the poor little hedgehog somehow got mixed in with a bunch of other stuff and....got lost, got given away, got thrown out...SOMETHING. It disappeared. My poor brokenhearted child still misses "Hedgie" and wants him back desperately. Yes, I feel absolutely buried in mother guilt.

I must make another hedgehog-it won't be Hedgie, but hopefully it will make amends.
