Simple Pop-Up Card - featuring Elmer's productsAs the holidays approach, I start experimenting with different styles of cards to send to friends and relatives.
I love pop-up mechanisms, but my problem is trying to go overboard with designs, which makes them hard to reproduce many copies easily.
Here's a very simple pop-up mechanism which can easily be used for many cards!
Materials:- X-ACTO 9" Paper Trimmer
- X-ACTO Gripster Craft Knife
- X-ACTO 12" Self-healing Cutting Mat
- CraftBond Glue Stick
- CraftBond Glue Dots
Start by using the paper trimmer to cut the size you want for the card (remember it will need to fold in half!).
(For this, I just cut an 8.5" x 11" sheet of cardstock in half. Not the best size to find envelopes for, but whatever.)
Fold it in half....
...and make two parallel cuts on the creased edge. (The X-ACTO precision tip scissors work great for this!)
Lift up the flap you made...
...and crease it down in both directions.
Open the card and invert the flap so it folds the opposite direction of the card.
Now, create your design (or cut out a photo) that you want to pop up inside the card. Make sure it is smaller than the space between the flap and the edge of the card, or it will stick out of the card when the card is closed.
Use the Gripster Knife and Self-Healing Mat to cut out the image.
Stick a glue dot in the center bottom of the back of your image.
And stick it on the front side of the flap!
Now to finish the outside... Use the paper trimmer to cut paper the same size as the inside.
Use the Glue Stick to coat the inside of one half of the outside sheet.
Stick one side of the card onto the outside sheet, making sure the center crease is lined up well.
Then glue the inside part and stick the other side together.
(I like to get all possible air bubbles out with my bone folder!)
As for the outside, you can use the glue stick or glue dots to attach another drawing or photo. Or, the Elmer's Painters Pens work well to cover patterned paper too.
