Out of the blue, I received an email from someone asking me if I could run a steampunk craft for a group of teens at their library. She found me through another website I frequent. It's a couple of hours away from me, and the youth coordinator has offered to pay for supplies, transportation, and my time. We're working out the details now.
It'll be me running it, with perhaps an assistant or two. So, she was thinking possibly jewelry, like a fancy badge or necklace-but this needs to be something that'll work for boys and girls. She also liked the idea of a fancy bookmark, but is pretty much leaving this all in my hands.
I'll be drafting my own teen to make whatever I can come up with, to get her opinion of too hard/too easy/cool/lame.
What would be a steampunk craft that would work for teenagers, both boys and girls? Not too complicated. I'm fine with using glue, and maybe markers, but it's probably a good idea to stay away from paint.
I need all the ideas I can get! Thanks!

Well, when I think ( or make) steampunk, its not usually simple, so I think you have quite a challenge here!

I would say jewelery, but since it needs to be for boys,too......so maybe hats? You could buy some at Walmart or Joannes and have them decorate them?

Or perhaps some of those little wooden boxes?

Creating steampunk jewelry may be your best bet. Other items the guys like would be goggles, and modifying Nerf guns for a steampunk look. Unfortunately, the gun mods would call for spray paint and that would be an outside project. Not sure how much time or money you have, but buying the goggles to modify could be costly.

As for the jewelry, you can find steampunk elements, gears, etc. in Hobby Lobby or Michaels stores if those are near you. You could also throw in hardware store items like washers, O rings, hex nuts in brass and zinc.

Here are a few links that might get you started:

Easy steampunk necklace you can recreate with a metal shape you can distress and hang with charm such as gears, keys, hardware element. A simple leather cord would be good for girls or guys.

Another simple necklace example using hardware washer.

Here are some examples from fellow craftsters:

Another example of a steampunk necklace with gears. All these elements can be found in the scrapbooking area of Hobby Lobby or Michaels, the designer is Tim Holtz.

Let me know if you have any more questions, I love steampunk!
