So I'm taking a checkerboard washcloth pattern (squares of seed stitch alternating with squares of stockingette surrounded by a seed stitch border) and blowing it up into a blanket. I figure it'd be grippy because my mom's house has wood floors and with the seed stitch it'd be a bit cushy on the floor but not too much.

SOOO much SEEEED stitch!!! I'm due in March but this might not get done until she's 2.

You could do the seed stitch squares in reverse stockinette, with the purl on the RS. That would still look good and you'd only have to seed st on the borders.
