I've been playing minecraft for a few weeks now, and am completely addicted (I've even dreampt about it), so when my favorite, also minecraft addicted cousin's 16th birthday rolled around, I knew I had to put my newly discovered building skills to the test!
And thus was created......
The Minecraft Cake!
Using a pair of 10" square pans and a few good ol box cake mixes, I baked up two chocolate cakes for the dirt, a vanilla with a touch of black coloring to make the grey stone, and a yellow cake for the sand. And then of course some jello for the water.
Once I had a basic idea and sketch of what I wanted, I mapped out each layer separately, marking each square with a D, S, St or W so that putting each layer together would be a breeze (and it almost was). I then figured out that my magic number for the block size was 1.25", which allowed me to get the most squares out of each cake. I then created a grid sheet on freezer paper and poked holes through each intersecting point with a skewer. After leveling each cake so that it was 1.25" high, I lay my grid on top and poked holes into the cake and used a ruler to cut things as straight as I could, using my map as a guide.
I brushed each piece with simple syrup to lock the moisture in and then set to work on assembling everything. I was very happy to see that because everything was so level, I didn't need dowels or anything to support it.
Between baking and cooling and cutting and stacking, I worked on the paper craft animals. Making these guys was more time consuming than making the cake itself, but my cousin loved them so much that he saved them and has them set up in his room.
And of course, it wouldn't be Minecraft without a Creeper.
